While the average temperature on Maui ranges from about 75 to 85 degrees F all year long, there are two distinct seasons: dry and rainy. The dry season starts in May and goes through October, while the rainy season starts in November and runs through April. The west and south parts of the island are relatively sheltered from the wind, so they stay the warmest and driest. Kihei and Wailea on the south coast and Kapalua and Lahaina in the west are popular resort spots. Maui getaways are most expensive between December and April and from June through August. The last two weeks of December are especially busy and therefore the most expensive. Whale watching, for example, is at its peak January through March. You can see pods from the shore, or you can charter a boat and see them up close. If you avoid the busy winter season, this activity won't be available to you. And, although they are rare on Maui, should a hurricane hit, it will most likely happen in late summer or fall. This, too, might influence when you book your vacation.
Another busy time to watch out for is Golden Week, a Japanese holiday in late April or early May. Maui fills up with tourists, so reservations become harder to book, and prices increase. Halloween, too, is a busy time, especially in Lahaina. You'll need to plan a trip well in advance if you wish to visit the island then.
If you want to avoid the big crowds and enjoy lower rates, the transitional seasons of spring and fall are the ideal times of year to visit Maui. Summer and winter seasons in Maui are beautiful, but aren't the best seasons for people watching their budgets and looking to avoid crowds. No matter when you go, though, booking a vacation condominium on Maui is definitely the right idea. Why cram into a single hotel room or suite when you can enjoy a beachside condo complete with a full kitchen, multiple bedrooms and lots of home entertainment options? With all the amenities of home, condos make great accommodations for full families or groups, and you will get the best deals if you book one for the slower seasons.
