Varicose Veins Stockings: Alleviate Varicose Veins the Non-Surgical Way

Many jobs today require long hours of standing on your feet.

Unfortunately, the long periods of time on your feet take a toll on your body, especially your legs, leaving many with unsightly varicose veins. If you're suffering from varicose veins for the first time, you may be unsure of what exactly is causing them and what you can do about it without spending a fortune on surgical procedures.

Fortunately, there are many styles of varicose veins stockings, like Jobst support socks, that can help you with your problem.

Causes

Varicose veins are caused by defective or damaged valves within the veins. The valves are important because they regulate blood flow and keep the blood moving toward the heart. So when a person with poorly functioning valves stands up, the blood flow reverses and flows down the superficial veins, when they should be flowing upward to the heart. The muscles surrounding the vein contract, and empty the deeper veins, causing a build up of pressure. This causes even MORE blood to go the wrong way through faulty valves and increases pressure in the superficial veins, producing those pesky varicose veins.

There are many factors that can aggravate the faulty vein situation and cause varicosity in the legs. Pregnancy is associated with an increase in blood volume. Pair that with the added pressure on the veins by the weight of the growing uterus, and the relaxation of vein walls because of increased estrogen and progesterone production, and you have recipe for varicose veins. Prolonged standing is another common way to get varicose veins. Many long-time retail workers or those in the service industry are frequent sufferers of varicose veins. Also, most elderly show some degree of varicosity.

Home-Treatment

Elevating your legs as much as possible can be a great way to treat your varicose veins. If you're working and are able to take a 30 minute break during your shift to rest, take it. As far as elevation goes, it's important to raise your legs to heart level for at least a half-hour to get the maximum effect.

Wear compression stockings such as Jobst support socks or Ted hose. These come in a variety of styles and sizes for men and women. There are even petite sizes for smaller individuals. The key to support socks is to put them on in the morning before your veins swell. If you try them and experience even further discomfort, especially after walking, remove them and see your health care provider to find out what else you can do.

All in all, you don't have to live with uncomfortable and unsightly varicose veins. Compression garments are a great way to get them under control and get everything flowing the way it should be flowing. Walking is also a great exercise and can help force the blood out of the deeper vein system. If you work a job that requires you to stand for long periods of time, wearing varicose veins stockings during your shift could give you great results.

Your legs are your livelihood, so take of them!
