How to Clean Your Inkjet Printer

Nothing is as frustrating as when you have to print an important document or photograph and you see faded regions, black lines, or faded text. Most of the time, these issues can easily be fixed by cleaning your printer. Performing a printer cleaning is one of the best ways to have consistently high quality documents and photos.

The majority of popular inkjet printers can undergo cleaning procedures the same way. If you have a larger, more complicated printer, there may be more steps in the procedure. However, it is still a simple process to undergo.

If you use a printer everyday for office-type reasons, then most of the time, all you need to do is give your printer a solid wipe down. The one thing to keep in mind when wiping down your printer is to not use cleaning items that are meant for other types of activities.

The types of chemicals you should avoid include all of those mixtures that have alcohol or other harsh cleaning agents. Harsh cleaning chemicals can damage the printer's electrical workings, and more times than not, they end up doing more damage than good. Stick to gentle cleaning methods such as a damp, non-shedding towel or baby wipes. Whatever types of solution you use, make sure that water is kept away from the printer's innards.

When it comes to actually cleaning your printer, be sure to unplug the machine before you start. Make sure that the plug is far away from the unit and that all of the lights on the printer are out.

Open the front of the printer and lightly wipe the area, especially those areas that are thick with dust. If your printed documents have shown black marks on the back of the paper, check inside the machine and wipe away any excess ink that you see. Do your best to wipe the area as much as necessary to ensure that no moisture lingers.

Cleaning your printer cartridges is another important part of cleaning out your printer. Take out each cartridge one at a time and wipe the excess ink away gently. Double check to make sure that no material is left behind on the cartridges' exit ports. You may also want to remove the paper receiver basket and check for paper shards and dust underneath the machine, around the legs. It's a good idea to wipe down the basket also.

It is important to remember to clean your printer regularly so that you won't have to deal with more complicated issues such as clogged printer heads.
