Before You Kill Bedbugs, Find Bedbugs

Bedbugs are the bane of many a city dweller's existence. Like other infestations, a bedbug problem can be hard to shake, but in this case it's because it's often difficult to tell if your apartment even has bedbugs. Thus, the first step in getting rid of bedbugs is finding bed bugs.

Why are these insects so hard to find? Bed bugs are small in size and tend to only come out at night, spending the rest of the time hiding in sofas, chairs, and of course beds. Essentially, they like any area where humans or other warm blooded animals are likely to appear. This means many people can go months with ever seeing the bed bugs plaguing their apartments — they do, however, notice the critters' bite marks on their skin.

Some bed bug exterminators also offer detection services, but most people with experience in bed bug control will tell you to hire a separate companies to find and kill bedbugs. This is because you might not even have bed bugs, and a business that exclusively offers detection will likely charge lower rates, as they help out people unsure of their infestation status on a daily basis.

Believe it or not, these detection services actually use teams of trained dogs to literally sniff out the offending insects. Dogs actually work a lot faster than humans — they can sweep a room for bugs in as little as five minutes, performing a task that would take a human inspector up to an hour. Could your pet do that?

Before they are willing to take steps to prevent bed bugs, many apartment dwellers want to know — how bad are they? To put it simply, bed bugs pretty much epitomize the world nuisance, meaning they're very, very annoying, but not that harmful to your health.

Bed bug bites and the resulting itching and irritation are pretty much indistinguishable from mosquito bites. In fact, one of the only differences researchers have discovered is that bed bug bites tend to last slightly longer, but even this isn't true across the board, as everyone reacts to bed bug bites a little differently. Some people will get itchy bumps similar to mosquito bites, while others will experience no symptoms at all. Plus, in rare instances, people allergic to bed bugs have encountered symptoms such as nausea. Scientists have speculated that, like mosquitos, bed bugs are capable of transferring diseases through their saliva, although there have been no reported cases of this happening.

Of course, much of the nuisance factor is psychological. People want to get rid of bedbugs because they don't like the idea of insects hiding in their beds, sofas, and other items of furniture. In this way, an infestation can feel like an invasion, and lead to some pretty serious symptoms, including insomnia, anxiety, and irritability. It's this psychological aspect that drives many people to bring in the experts.
