The hobby of beekeeping is fast becoming one of the top pastimes for people from all walks of life. Although the whole idea of keeping bees in your backyard may seem a little challenging in the beginning, any novice beekeeper can easily overcome that with a little help and guidance. In order for you to get this result, the first thing you need to do is to make sure that you are well prepared by getting all the essential equipment you need to keep bees. The first thing that you need to get is of course, a beehive. Each has their advantages and disadvantages, but bees will be happy with any well constructed beehive. Next, you will need to suit up with all the necessary apparel for the job. It is very important that you get yourself a beekeeping suit, or at least a beekeeping hat and veil, and a pair of leather gloves so that you can protect yourself from any irate bees. Although bees seldom go on a stinging rampage, and only ever sting in self defense, but you still need to make sure that you always have the proper attire when coming into contact with them. After you're done dealing with the equipment and protective gear, you can then go out to look for the bees that will populate your hive. The best place to start is your local beekeeping association - that is if you have one in your area. Here you will be able to get a starter colony, or at least advice where to get your first bees from. If there is no local beekeeping association, then you can try to source your bees from specialist breeders near you. Some suppliers may even be able to provide you with a starter colony through registered mail if you prefer. Just check on internet search engines or classified ads and you should be able to find a reliable supplier. Be sure to begin your search in good time, as bees can be scarce at certain times of year. This has particularly been so in recent years because of colony collapse disorder, where up to one third of the honeybee population has simply disappeared - experts still do not know why. Beekeeping is a really rewarding and relaxing hobby, but there is a lot to learn and it is definitely an ongoing learning experience. To make your first beekeeping experiences as stress free as possible, try to read and learn as much as you can before you get your bees. Obviously, the best way to learn is by doing, but knowing the latest tips and techniques will make your life a lot easier when you first begin beekeeping.
