If you like doing magic tricks that will captivate and entertain, then this article is for you. This is a close up style of magic, meaning that it can only be done in a small group of people. They'll need to be close enough to see your hands and what you are holding. This is best as used as an impromptu trick, and will keep them guessing for a while, even as they try to do the trick themselves. I've done this with a lot of different people, and it seems to work best on children. They love this trick and are always impressed. Once they "discover" how this simple trick works, they'll be off and running to their friends or parents to show them. You'll need a rubber band, and a paper clip. You don't have to use a paper click, just anything that can hang over the rubber band that is easily visible from a few feet away. Here's the trick. You stretch the rubber band out between your hands, holding either end between your thumb and forefinger. Hold your hands so that rubber band is at an angle, and not parallel to the floor. Start off with the paper clip on the low side of the angled rubber band. Now, as you project your psychic energy on the paper clip, it will magically rise up the rubber band, from your lower hand toward your higher hand, as if has no choice but to obey your powerful telekinetic abilities. But prepared to hear stunned squeals of excitement from your stunned onlookers. Here's how to do the trick. The idea is that with lots of "slack" hidden in your left hand, you can let it out slowly, and give the impression that nothing is happening to the rubber band. You grasp the rubber band in the middle, and on one of the ends. Then the length between the middle, and the other end (that you didn't grab) you keep hidden in the palm of your hand. So when you start out, lets say your left hand is lower than your right hand. You have the end of the rubber band in your right hand, raised up. The middle of the rubber band is in your left hand, but it appears to the observer that it is the end. The rest of the length is hidden in your palm. Pull the rubber band out, so the stretched out, visible portion, is about 8 inches or so. The paper clip should be hanging near the bottom, near your left hand. Now all you do is simply let out some "slack" with your left hand. Slowly let some of the hidden rubber band slip through your left thumb and forefinger. When you do this, the rubber band will "pull" the paper clip up toward your upper hand, but it will appear that it is moving by magic. The trick is to stretch out the rubber band before you start so that when you let out some "slack" the length can appear to stay the same. You hold your hands in the same place while letting some slack in. That way the paper clip will appear to magically slide up the rubber band. It takes a little bit of practice (maybe five minutes!) to be able to let out some slack without making it obvious, but once you get it down, this trick is a quick and easy way to impress a bunch of kids or adults whenever you feel like it.
