Are you prepared for an emergency or survival situation at any time? Ever since the terrorist attacks in the United States on Sept. 11th, we have been hearing much about being prepared for an emergency. No matter where you are; whether you are camping, hiking, or at home, it is a good idea to an emergency kit at the ready.
A natural disaster such as a hurricane, tornado or severe storms is something you need to be prepared for, especially if you live in an area where these types of emergencies may crop up at any time. Having some essentials is a must if you are to weather the emergency.
What to Put in Your Emergency Kit
You should always keep batteries in your emergency kit. Depending upon the equipment you will be using, you should stock up on batteries so that there are extras there if you should need them. Other items you should include are a first aid kit, flashlights, and an AM/FM radio. Another item you may want to include is a siren or air horn to signal your whereabouts should you get lost in the wilderness.
If you are going into the great outdoors, it is essential you have some extra food, blankets and it is always a good idea to have foul weather gear as well. Accidents can happen easily in the wilderness, and you are advised to be prepared.
If you are in a boat or another type of vehicle, you may want to pack some flares and some essential tools such as a wrench, bolt cutter or a sledgehammer. You can buy emergency kits that come complete with everything you may need in case of an accident or emergency no matter where you are planning on going.
Information that May be Valuable in an Emergency
For a natural disaster, you will want to find out where the nearest shelter is located. This will allow you to plan how you will get there and the route you will take. This will save you valuable time when time is of the essence. You may also want to read some books that will lead you in the right direction to be fully prepared for any type of emergency.
Food and Water
Food and water are essential for survival if you are lost in the woods and can come in handy if you are unable to leave your house and there is no electricity. You can stock up on canned goods, camping food and other types of freeze dried edibles. Always have plenty of clean water so that you will be able to keep yourself and others hydrated, especially if the water has been tainted by a disaster.
Telephones
Most people think they have things well in hand because they have a cell phone with them. This is not always a guarantee if you are in an area where service is spotty or non-existent. You will not always be able to count on your cell phone working so it is imperative that you have the items you need in order to survive the emergency or natural disaster.
Don't be neurotic or worrisome, but keep preparedness in mind at all times. You should be ready to deal with an emergency at anytime, because emergencies don't wait for you to be ready.
