MetroPCS Cell Phones: Staying With The Local Community

Exactly what is the point of signing person who isn't considered famous to an endorsement deal? In terms of celebrity, that doesn't sound like an endorsement deal at all. If no one knows the person, that person is not really endorsing the product in the way the company would like, right? What if that person was not a national sensation but rather a local hero. And what if the endorsement was a local one not a national one, then the whole idea starts to make a lot more sense, right? Well, that was the thinking behind a successful campaign that coupled MetroPCS Cell Phones and D.J. Shockley.

Who is D.J. Shockley you ask? Is he just some guy selling Unlocked GSM Cell Phones in the mall? Not quite. While he's not a national sensation, he is a local sensation in Georgia, and more specifically, Atlanta. D.J. Shockley is a quarterback in the National Football and plays for the Atlanta Falcons. He grew up in College Park, Georgia and played college ball at the University of Georgia. Thus, the football lovers of Georgia grew up with Shockley as kid, watched him blossom into a starting college quarterback in the SEC and eventually get drafted into the NFL (in the seventh round 223 overall).

And thus MetroPCS Cell Phones decided to do some local marketing of their product. After all the company is southern based, Dallas, TX to be specific, and it's an interesting approach to endorsements, but one that works. The company, in this case MetroPCS Cell Phones, pays less for a more concentrated endorsement. And they share with a more interested audience. Shockley did in-store appearances, radio, print and online advertising for the company. He is a much more tangible endorsement than superstar celebrities. People can meet him, see him in the city and then see him on the field Sunday. He's also a role model for the kids. They see a guy who grew up in the neighborhood and has since pursued and realized his dream of playing football in the NFL.

So for MetroPCS Cell Phones, this endorsement won't get them more clients nationwide but it will give them exposure from a trusted local hero. And they aren't the only ones, companies with Unlocked GSM Cell Phones that want to start off small will do similar campaigns. Both sides benefit too, the company gets ins into the NFL while the athlete gets corporate contacts for further deals as well as a career path after football.
