Industrial corporations need various kinds of demolition activities such as to create space for new improvements or to renovate an old building. This work is associated with many kinds of hazards and is considered more risky and dangerous. That is why such demolition requires a team of professionals or the services of an expert demolition company to handle the job successfully. When large structures are torn down, a variety of hazardous materials may cause harm to environment, to the experts who are dealing with it, and the surrounding buildings. Therefore, every worker must have expert knowledge and be aware of the appropriate measures to effectively control it. The kinds of hazardous materials and other problems associated with demolition in the construction industry are given below: Asbestos: It is a fiber found in sprayed coating on steel column, insulation materials, fire resistant walls, asbestos cement sheets or flooring material. If people working at demolition site inhale this material, they may suffer from serious lungs diseases so it is necessary to remove asbestos before starting the demolition work. Lead: This is often found in the form of dust or fume. It is extremely hazardous and can cause neurological and physical problems. Exposure to this material is expected from paint, urban dust and lead based petrol. Silica: Silica dust can be generated whenever stones, bricks and concrete are being broken, cut or grinded. Breathing in the air containing silica dust can cause silicosis, a lung disease. PCBs: This is also a health hazardous toxic substance. The major sources of PCBs are electric transformers, capacitors, refrigeration and heating equipment. Gases and vapors: These are chemicals that can be harmful if adequate ventilation is not there at the site of demolition. These vapors are caused by burning waste materials and rusting of metals, tanks and pipes. Confined spaces: Basements, tanks and excavations can cause harm if atmosphere contains insufficient oxygen or excessive amount of carbon monoxide, methane or hydrogen sulfide. Before you enter these places, it is a good idea to ensure that there is a safe level of moisture inside. High level of noise and vibration: This is created by machinery, equipment or explosives involved in demolition work. Excessive exposure to these noise and vibration levels can cause hearing loss. Demolition is a kind of work that gives exposure to hazardous substances including asbestos, lead, silica, noise and fumes. Safety measures are very important and must be taken during concrete cutting. This is because many ailments can be associated with the processes of concrete cutting or grinding.
