The surgical method called laparoscopy involves inserting a laparoscope through a cut in the abdomen. Laparoscopy is used by doctors to look inside a patient's abdominal organs or make necessary repairs without making large cuts that could take longer healing time or more extensive hospital treatment. A basic understanding of laparoscopy is necessary if you are going to undergo surgery that involves it such as laparoscopic fertility surgery. A laparoscope and other surgical instruments are used during the procedure to diagnose or operate inside the patient's abdomen Laparoscopy necessitates only a small incision on the abdomen just sufficient to insert the laparoscope and other necessary instruments. The laparoscope is a device consisting of a light, camera and a fiber-optic tube. These instruments all help the doctor inspect the patient's internal organs. The diagnosis and treatment of infertility and other health concerns can be helped with laparoscopy Some fertility doctors usually employ laparoscopy to diagnose and treat the possible causes of a patient's infertility. However, this surgical treatment is generally made after other diagnostic exams for infertility have been conducted. Though, there are some infertility causes that can only be diagnosed using laparoscopy like endometriosis. Laparoscopic surgery is also useful in cases where there is a need to biopsy suspicious cysts in the patient's body or to identify an internal pain suffered by the patient is a sign of something more serious. For instance, if a patient has pelvic pain, the doctor may use laparoscopic surgery to find the cause of pain and, possibly, administer treatment, like removing scar tissue. The patient must prepare extensively before undergoing the procedure The doctor will first let the patient know of the various preparations that need to be made before the procedure. In most cases, the patient should not eat or drink anything during the 8 hours prior to the procedure. The patent might also be given with antibiotics. A general anesthesia will be applied as well. Patients are usually given fluids and medications that help induce relaxation through an IV. Generally, patients sleep through the entire period of the surgery. Carbon dioxide is filled into the abdomen of the patient to create space for the laparoscope During a laparoscopic procedure, it is important that the patient's abdomen has enough room for the surgical instruments and the laparoscope. To do this, the doctor will make a small cut in the patient's abdomen right after the anesthesia has taken effect. Carbon dioxide gas will then fill the abdomen through a needle inserted through the cut. The laparoscope will then be inserted into the cut, allowing the doctor to easily observe the various organs and tissues. In certain cases, additional cuts might be necessary to accommodate other surgical instruments required for treating or making repairs. Knowing about the various aspects and procedures involved in laparoscopy can aid patients in knowing the necessary preparations and risks that it entails.
