For people who have trouble conceiving, this fertility clinic offers services specializing in giving care and treatment of infertility issues. Fertility clinics follow standard guidelines for every medical treatment they conduct on their patients. In-vitro fertilization is one of the most common treatments done in fertility clinics. This medical treatment also has a sequence of procedures to follow. Gynecological testing Before anything else, a female patient undergoes gynecological examination to confirm her infertility. This procedure helps patients to determine if the treatment is really the best option for them to take. Assessment of the patient The evaluation step immediately follows confirmation of the patient's infertility. This step can take as long as one to two months and may be divided into parts. An orientation and education of the couple about IVF treatment precedes any other steps of this treatment. Part two of the procedure involves examinations and diagnostic testing of the patient to see if IVF treatment will work for her. Providing medications to stimulate the woman's ovulation Two hormone medications will be administered to the patient during the beginning of her menstrual cycle. The first medication regulates the timing of ovulation while the other stimulates the production of the eggs. Both medications are administered through injections and are taken daily. While on medication, trans-vaginal ultrasounds will be administered to the patient. With this, the development of the follicles in which the female's eggs are located can be assessed or monitored. A third medication is administered after the doctor determines that the eggs are mature and ready for ovulation. The last medication acts as a stimulant to the ovaries to discharge the eggs. Usually this is undertaken on the 12th day during the course of the treatment. Acquiring the eggs As soon as the eggs are mature, they will be retrieved. The egg retrieval step begins with the doctor administering anesthesia to the patient. Through a needle, the eggs are transferred to a test tube directly from the follicles. For guidance during the minor surgery, a trans-vaginal ultra-sound is performed. Fertilization and incubation The eggs are then combined in a lab with the sperm from the husband. About 60% of the total number of retrieved eggs will be fertilized. Once fertilized, the egg cells go through incubation and will be monitored closely for about 3 to 5 days. Administering the embryo's implantation The resulting embryos from the previous step are evaluated for quality. With an astraumatic catheter, the desired number of embryos is transferred into the patient's uterus. Usually, about 2 to 4 embryos are implanted. In case the first attempt at pregnancy fails, the unused embryos will be preserved through cryopreservation so that they can be used for the 2nd time. Monitoring of the embryo implantation The patient, in this step, is given progesterone to aid in the implantation of the embryos. The patient will take a pregnancy test on day 10. The patient can have her prenatal care to her own physician once the pregnancy test turns positive. If the implantation of embryos failed, a new cycle of treatment can be administered. The success of each step in the process affects the overall success of the fertility treatment so it is important that each step is properly carried out and completed.
