Headaches - A Scourge of Mankind

We've all had them and they're not fun. One of the most universal disorders, this common experience can bring a grown man to his knees.

They've been noted in Biblical writings and in other texts from ancient civilizations. I'm talking about headaches and, as you probably know, they can stop the bravest and the strongest person in their tracks.

A headache can plague just about anyone. At some point in their life, just about everyone has experienced a severe headache. In any year close to 90% of all the men in the world as well as 95% of all the women have at least one headache. Many women experience headaches coincidental to their menstrual periods.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason why this happens, but some people rarely have a headache while others seem to suffer from them regularly.

Although it might feel like a freight train is running through your head, your headaches are not pains in your brain. That's because your brain cannot actually feel any pain.

Rather, the majority of headaches actually happen outside of your skull. They happen in the blood vessels, nerves, and muscles that cover your neck and your head.

By the time children are seven years old about 40% of them have had headaches. And, by the time they're fifteen, 75% have had to deal with this totally uncomfortable experience.

It's not unusual for parents to be concerned that their child's pain is caused by some serious condition such as a brain tumor of meningitis. However, conditions such as these are very rare.

There are a number of different kinds of headaches. These include organic, migraine, tension, rebound, cluster, and chronic daily headaches. Migraine headaches and tension headaches account for about 90% of all of the headaches that people experience.

One way to get rid of headaches is by massage - or self-massage. Another way is just by relaxing.

When acupressure is used at the pain's source it could cause the muscles to begin to relax.

People who suffer from sinus headaches might want to try putting an ice mask on their temples and around their eyes. This type of therapy also can work for a headache that's caused by stress.

Some people who have headaches get rid of them by adding heat rather than could. However, since this increases the flow of blood this type of treatment could make some types of headaches even worse.

Often, the best remedy is to turn the lights off, lie down for several minutes, and relax. This works especially well if you are suffering from a severe tension headache.

In order to get rid of a headache some people take way too much acetaminophen. If they overdose on this medication they could actually die.
