People living in an assisted living facility or in a nursing home should be treated with respect and dignity. And the entire staff should act with their best intentions at the forefront of their minds. Unfortunately this doesn't always happen. In the United States, on many occasions, nursing home abuse happens even in the best assisted living facilities. Often nursing home abuse is physical in nature. It could literally involve beatings. However there are other types of physical abuse that have been known to occur. There have been documented situations where the nursing home residents were sexually assaulted. They were molested, sexually abused, or sexually humiliated in one way or another. There are also many cases on record where workers in assisted living facilities have neglected to care for one or more of the elderly residents. Sometimes the workers have withheld food and medicine. Other times they did not deliver any correspondence from the patient's loved ones. There have been situations where a nursing home resident was forced to stay in his or her bed, day after day. As a result they developed bed sores. And some nursing homes do not adequately clean their residents or empty their bed pans. Other forms of nursing home abuse are caused by the physical condition of the residence itself. The floors may be wet or unclean. They may be unmarked. As a result many of the elderly residents can slip and fall. Some managers of nursing homes have let their homes deteriorate to the degree that electrical wires are exposed. This not only poses a tripping hazard, there is the potential for electrocution as well. Sanitary conditions may be terrible. The utensils and plates could be dirty. The sheets could remain unwashed. The home could be infested with bugs and vermin. The list goes on and on. No one should be treated like this, especially a senior citizen.
