Is it possible to get health insurance for unemployed? Yes it is but you must look into the previous health insurance offers of the company you worked for. Some companies can protect terminated employees through the COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) mandate. He COBRA states once an employee has resigned or was terminated are still eligible in getting Health Insurance Benefits from the company within the next 18 months. But, you still have to pay the premiums to your company and since you are not an employee anymore, you will pay more. Not all companies fall under the COBRA, some might be too small of a company causing the terminated and long term unemployed employees to be excluded in the COBRA mandate. In addition, only 7% of the unemployed can afford to continue the COBRA because it is becoming more expensive.

So what are the other health insurance for unemployed can they apply for? First is to apply for an individual health insurance. Getting a private insurance might be cheaper for you instead of paying the premiums to the group medical insurance in your company. In this type of insurance, your family will also be considered which is why you can get lower rates for your insurance. Before changing policies you will also need to look into the contract you have signed with your group medical insurance with the company, if you are free of the contract you can openly apply for a new one. But you must also apply at the right time, do not apply for individual health insurance if you have someone pregnant or sick in the family, this might increase your premiums.

Another option for health insurance for unemployed you can choose is the low income insurance plans. And since you are unemployed, you are not earning at all and you will just be using your savings for the insurance you are getting. With this type of insurance, you will be under the federal health plan of low income groups called the Medicaid. They are also offering coverage to the children of poor families knowing that their parents won't be able to pay for them once they get sick. This type of insurance really focuses on low income individuals and families. There are different insurance aid that your government will mandate, it will really depend which country you are from. Some countries like the U.S. give much consideration to poor families since they can afford to do it. Well, in whatever way you see it, health insurance for unemployed is possible but will be hard especially if you are living on savings alone.
