CO2 cartridges have become a popular commercial and industrial device. For those of you who have little idea what it is, CO2 cartridges are made of metal which contains highly pressurized carbon dioxide gas. Throughout the past century, the uses of CO2 have evolved so rapidly that it has become useful, even indispensable, in various businesses.
CO2 cartridges are used to make carbonated beverages, cool and preserve food, inflate tires, and automate or propel machinery. Their versatility has led to such market demand that companies have begun to manufacture them to be stored in small steel, disposable gas cylinders. This way a CO2 cartridge would be readily available to anyone. And, indeed, everyone has been using them. The beverage, oil, manufacturing industries, and even ordinary households have insatiable need for them.
With such high demand for pressurized CO2 cartridges, one cannot help but wonder how it is disposed of properly. The environmental impact must still be considered due to the sheer number (equivalent to millions) of these products that are used every day. Many people place high regard in the protection of the environment. Thus, they find ways to balance the protection of the environment while enjoying the benefits of CO2-infused drinks, perfectly inflated tires, flawlessly preserved meat, fruits and vegetables, and other little things that make life better.
Most CO2 cartridges are contained either in refillable or disposable gas cartridges or cylinders. Since they are enclosed from both ends and also made of steel, they are difficult to recycle at home. Disposable gas cylinders, which are bigger than cartridges, mostly contribute to the growing piles of scrap metal waste since they are used only once. However, steel is one of the most attractive metals to recycle due to its sustainability. It is 100% recyclable. It can be industrially recycled repeatedly in an infinite number of times and its quality is not reduced. It can be used for a multitude of purposes. It is also energy efficient as compared to manufacturing or processing with other metals.
Households and companies alike are striving to be responsible in their waste management. Households sort leave items for local authorities to collect. Used cartridges, like other steel waste items, usually end up in a scrap metal recycling plant. It is where they are melted into liquid form then molded to form large blocks and, finally, rolled into coils. These coils are then manufactured into new products, such as cans, cars, office supplies and, of course, gas cylinders.
Most companies who manufacture CO2 cartridges encourage their customers to return empty containers to them for proper disposal. This practice is both economically sound and reflective of environmental awareness.
We only have one earth. Our Earth is filled with things worth protecting. If humans had found a way to extend the use of CO2, they would, without a doubt, figure more creative ways to reuse their cartridges. Now, CO2 cartridges are not used only to store aerosol products and other chemicals. They can also be the main component of an artwork. What a way to inspire everyone else's imagination!
