How can you be sure that your office is secure? Security is an important thing to consider in the workplace, especially if you or your office deals with sensitive information. Even if it seems like you have a commonplace job, you may work for a government office or your office might be located in a building that is leased by the government. This can make you a target. This is why you should take extra precautions to downgrade your risk. It's always better to be safe than sorry, so if you're not certain that you workplace is safe, you need to immediately rectify this. Here's how to do it: You should first determine whether or not your office's security situation has been assessed by professionals. If you work for a government office and no thorough security assessment has been conducted, you can go to the nearest Federal Protective Service (FPS) office to request them to conduct a security assessment. Once the FPS has finished its assessment, you should take the following actions to make sure that your office is safe. Put a crisis communication plan in place If you don't already have one, your office should work out a crisis communication system. This will involve installing intercoms telephones, duress alarms or other hidden forms of communication. Your office's crisis communication system should involve key personnel as well as your workplace's security office. In the event that phones are not working or the phone lines are cut, your office should have a back-up communication system. One example is a two-way radio system. This way, you can still contact security personnel in the event of a threat. Put executives in inner offices The executives in a company are usually the ones who handle sensitive information. This may make them a target of criminals. This is why executive offices should be placed deep inside the building, as close as possible to its inner core. This will provide added protection to company executives. It will also prevent them from coming under surveillance from people who may be lurking outside the building. Another good method to ensure physical security is to make sure that people who handle classified information each have an hid proximity card. This card can be made using machines like id card printers. Each card should feature a recent photo of the employee. For added security measures, some id cards can be outfitted with a magnetic stripe that will enable them to open certain doors. Once a door has been outfitted with a card reader, it will only allow the bearers of a card with a specific magnetic stripe to access the door. For an even higher level of security, a series of binary numbers can be imprinted into the access cards of key employees. Each card can carry a unique number for each individual employee. When it comes to arranging the office, make sure that the office space is set up in such a way that visitors without an escort will be readily apparent. This will prevent unknown people from sneaking inside the office and stealing your company's secrets. Security is a key consideration for people who deal with sensitive information.
