A Backup Camera System and Other Important Safety Features

When shopping for a new car, there are certain safety features that every vehicle should have. We all know seat belts are a requirement, but does the car offer a backup camera system or have anti-lock brakes? What kind of airbags does it have? These are all crucial to ensure the safety of you and your passengers. Here are eight features to consider:

1. Advanced Front Airbags: These are not your ordinary airbags. Advanced airbags will factor in size, seat position, and the severity of the accident. This will determine how much the airbag will inflate and will reduce the risk of airbag related injuries and death. The feature is especially good for children and small adults.

2. Side Impact Airbags: Not all accidents happen head-on and side-impact airbags will protect you from a side crash. They are usually offered for the front passengers, but some cars do have the option for them in the back seats.

3. Anti-lock Braking System: The ABS prevents the car's wheels from locking up during severe breaking or when lightly breaking on slick roads. ABS will also allow shorter stopping distances on slippery roads. If the wheels lock up, you won't be able to control the steering wheel and could potentially cause a collision. Not only is this feature ideal for those in snow-ridden areas, it also works during rainy conditions.

4. Stability Control: Stability control goes right along with ABS. Sensors monitor how closely your car is to the intended path. A computer can therefore determine if you are skidding and will apply your ABS. (You have to have ABS in order to have stability control.)

5. Tire Pressure Monitoring System: Many people probably don't check their tire pressure as often as they should. An under-inflated tire is the main cause for tire failure. The monitoring system will send a warning light to the dashboard of the car when it does not have enough pressure. However, do not rely solely on the system. You should still continue to check tire pressure yourself.

6. Vehicle Backup Camera: Whether you drive an SUV or a sedan, it can often be difficult to see what is behind you. A backup camera system can help prevent accidents. Unfortunately, there have been many accidents involving small children because drivers were unaware there was anyone behind the car. Many backup camera systems also have motion sensors that will alert you when you are too close to an object or person.

7. Automatic Crash Notification: No one can predict an accident and chances are, your phone won't be anywhere in reach. A more serious accident can render you unconscious and put you in even more danger. The notification system will send emergency assistance even if you are unable to respond.

8. Active Head Restraints: Whiplash is a common occurrence among rear-end collisions. Restraints will eliminate the gap between your head and the head restraint, preventing neck injury.

Driving can be a difficult and accidents happen everyday. Is your car equipped to handle one and keep you safe?
