How You Can Reduce Your Risk Of Serious Illness

The only thing that would be better than having a cure for every disease would be to know where your greatest risks are so you could live a life that would reduce those risks. Unfortunately, there is no sure-fire way to know exactly what type of disease you may acquire some day. You can look at your family history and your medical history up until a certain point, but you may still be hit with an unexpected illness. Since you cannot tell exactly what may be in your medical future, it is important to live a healthy life in an effort to reduce potential risk of most diseases. This way you can avoid as many things as possible, regardless of whether you are at risk for lung cancer, pancreas cancer or any other illnesses or diseases.

The first way to lower your risk for illness and disease is to improve your diet. Nobody is perfect, but on the regular basis you can make an effort to improve your eating habits. Eating more fruits and vegetables will improve your healthy, help you lose weight if need be and give you more energy. Some doctors believe that high fat foods and foods that are severely processed increase your risk of illness. Others believe that while there is no direct correlation between specific foods and disease, there may be a connection between being overweight and getting sick. Obesity can lead to heart disease and it affects hormones, which some believe can lead to a variety of diseases.

Usually mentioned hand in hand with eating better is exercising. Moving and staying fit is one of the best things you can do to reduce your risk of a variety of health problems. It will take some effort, but when you see your body shape changing and your energy level rising you will be convinced it is well worth the work.

Sometimes giving up things is as important as adding things into your life. While you are trying to find time and motivation to exercise and eat right, try to eliminate smoking. It is becoming more and more difficult to be a smoker. From the inconvenience of smoking outdoors to the expense of buying cigarettes, smoking is hardly worth it anymore, even if you enjoy the habit. Quitting is tough, but when you realize the benefits, you will want to make the efforts. Not only will you feel healthier in the present, you will be healthier in the long run the sooner you quit.

Finally, do your best to avoid risky situations. Granted, science does not always agree what is a dangerous and what is low-risk but why would you expose yourself to something if it is not necessary. Whether it is radiation from x-rays, heating up plastic in the microwave or choosing organic foods over other options, you will not cause any additional harm by doing these things. When possible err on the side of caution and avoid things that are suspected to be dangerous.
