Shake Up Your Proposal With a Pearl or Buy Diamonds Online

Diamond engagement rings are a huge industry. Year after year thousands millions are purchased around the world, all with the same goal in mind: to make a lady happy.

Diamonds are pretty and everything, but you know what else is pretty? Pearls! If you're getting to propose, look into doing so with a pearl ring instead of a diamond engagement ring. Just because pearl engagement rings aren't as common as diamond ones doesn't mean they're to be shied away from.

There's a number of difference between diamonds and pearls, apart from their obviously dissimilar appearances. Pearls, for example, are built up over time from oysters' secretions of nacre (or Mother of Pearl). Diamonds, on the other hand, are mined from rocks that contain them naturally.

Pearls, unlike diamonds, can be "manmade," in a sense, through a process in which oyster shells are impregnated with nacre. Pearls also cannot be cut into the many shapes diamonds can be. While pearls cannot be intentionally formed into certain shapes, they do form into a variety of shapes on their own, including round, semi-round, teardrop, button, oval, pear, baroque and circled. (Bear in mind that apart from the potential wrath of a women who had her heart set on a diamond engagement ring, the only possible concern with using a pearl instead of a diamond is that pearls are a bit more likely to fall out of their setting than diamonds, due to their smooth, round surface. Also, while pearls must remain smooth and rounded to keep any value, they come in a vast array of shapes.)

Diamonds and pearls are also priced very differently. The cost of a diamond is based on the Three C's: cut, color and carat. For the most part, a colored diamond, hued because of imperfections within the stone, is rarer and therefore more valuable than a clear diamonds are the most common. Truly pure, clear diamonds without a trace of color, however, are extremely rare as well. The cost of pearls, on the other hand, is based on rarity and luster; perfectly round pearls are less common than, say, teardrop or baroque pearls.

In the end, you should buy whatever ring you think your fiancee-to-be will like the most. If you do decide to buy a pearl instead of diamond engagement ring, you'll be able to easily incorporate diamonds into the design. Add a ring of small diamonds around the pearl, or set a smaller pearl between a couple of larger diamonds. You could even inlay a bunch of tiny diamonds into the ring band itself. Go online to a ring design site and play around until you come up with a few looks she might like. The fact that you had a part in designing the ring yourself will make it all the more special.
