Personal safety is an important factor for every individual. While there are many who don't see the importance of discussing the issue of personal safety, but the fact of the matter is that dangerous situations do indeed occur, and need to be discussed. Those who are more informed about personal safety issues are those who are better prepared to avoid dangerous situations. Here are some tips for increasing personal safety on the road.

• Always keep an eye on vehicle maintenance. It is important to check tires and fluids approximately once a month and before long trips. Most vehicles have sensors that alert the driver if fluids or tire pressure is inadequate. However, checking is still a way to ensure safety on the road.

• Lanyards are tools that most people associate with the badge reel they wear at work. While the professional setting is a place where lanyards are widely used, these handy items can also be used in your vehicle to add safety. Many people attach their keys to a lanyard as a way to keep better track of them. However, lanyards can also be used to hold small items such as iPods or even pepper spray. Using this tool allows the protective spray to be kept in a safe place where it is also easily accessible in case of an emergency. For the new driver, a badge reel may make the ideal car accessory. Instead of placing car registration loosely in the glove box, a badge reel may provide a handy way to hold this information safely and in an organized way so it does not get lost. Using this method of holding insurance or registration cards, the new driver can easily find those important documents with no hassle whatsoever. Now that's thinking out of the box!

• When driving on the highway, it is important to always pay attention to all other vehicles in the area. It is easy to make the assumption that if you are driving at a safe speed, you are safe on the road. However, there are many things that could affect your commute, and other drivers is definitely one of them. By checking side and rearview mirrors periodically, you stay on top of those driving around you and increase your chances of being able to react appropriately and quickly to unexpected incidences.

• Since we share the road with others, it is important to use caution and manners equally and all the time. Unfortunately, there have been instances of violence that have occurred on the road. Due to that fact, it is wise to remember to use your blinker and keep safe distance between your vehicle and other vehicles on the road. Furthermore, use restraint over your own emotions when driving. The road is not the place to vent frustrations or allow anger to take control. When you control your emotions on the road, you're less apt to overreact to the mistakes of other drivers and more likely to enjoy your drive and get to where you're going safely.

Safety is important and no matter where you are, there are tips you can use to increase your ability to stay safe.
