Anyone who owns a house or building will have to, at one time or another, get in an expert to chase away rodents or other bugs and insects with poisons or other methods. However, not all contractors are equipped to do this work properly so it is essential that qualified personnel are used every time. To find out what is available in the local area, look on the internet under 'pest control' or 'termite control' to see what is on offer. The usual method for getting rid of bugs which eat through wood is for a deep trench to be dug around the whole property. Once this has been done, gallons of toxic chemicals are poured in to try to form a barrier between the nest and the home that they are intent on eating. However, this is now becoming a little old-fashioned since people do not want their homes and gardens disrupted in this way. Nowadays there are more modern methods where tubes are sunk into the garden and food placed in them. These feeding stations are set a few feet apart from each other and monitored by operatives on hand-held computers. Wherever there is activity, the operative can concentrate on this area instead of blanketing the whole area with poison food. The point of this is that poison food will eventually be taken back to the nest to kill all the insects there. Once the queen has been killed, the colony will die off anyway. If there is a barrier between the colony and the food supply, the insects will go elsewhere in search of food. Since these creatures can cover vast distances in the search for food, it is highly unlikely that the nest will be spotted. They are such clever creatures that they lay down scent trails to alert others when they have found a good food source. This is why it appears that beams and other wood is eaten almost instantaneously even when some preventative measures are taken. This method also works well for historic buildings where it would be virtually impossible to dig a trench around because of the disruption or sensitivity of the building. Could anyone imagine the Whitehouse being dug around? These little munching machines are all looking for the cellulose in the wood which is in the fabric of all buildings. Once they are present, the damage that they can cause is tremendous. People often do not realize that they are there until it is much too late. Signs to look for are dust droppings under furniture, hollow sounding beams and brown earth 'tubes' which are seen traversing immovable objects like concrete or metal. Once the tunnels are found, it is really a job for the expert who will come in and inspect the building. Finally, always make sure that the operatives give information about any poisons etc particularly if there are children or pets in the house. Always make sure to adhere to any advice they give and make sure that no one breathes in the fumes.
