Even in a world where pictures can be produced on computers, making hand drawn paintings using art materials is immensely more rewarding. Our relationship with art materials is unique because when you first picked up a pen or paintbrush that moment marked the starting point of how you began to express yourself visually. Artist Dave Bain told Digital Arts: "There is something wonderfully immediate about using a pencil on paper, without having to switch on a computer screen or click a mouse." Painting and drawing is a skill that demands intense physical control and an understanding of different types of media such as paper and canvas and endless hours of practice. If it takes such hard work to become good at art then why do so many people use art materials? Well the main answer is that it is so much fun as drawing and painting can transport you back to the playfulness of childhood. Getting better at painting and drawing is all about constant practice so it is vital to take advantage of any spare time you have available to get creative with art materials. Dave Bain told Digital Arts: "Wherever I am, if I have the materials to do it, I'll try to do a drawing. Even if I'm not quite in the mood or the final result is weak, just that process of drawing keeps me focused and improves my ability." Fellow artist Andy Macgregor agrees that practice makes perfect especially for beginners who should not be disheartened if their early attempts with art materials to do not result in masterpieces. He told Digital Arts: "It's most definitely a practice thing, but you should never be afraid to just draw what you see and welcome a sense of naïvety to your work." With any artistic discipline, it is crucial to experiment with different art materials and techniques as trial and error is a great way of honing your skills and developing your style.
