If the current economic climate is getting you down then cheer up with art supplies.

An increasing number of people are purchasing art supplies as painting and drawing is a relatively cheap and fun way to pass the time during a time when there is little disposable income available.

Sales of art supplies are also booming because more celebrities are revealing an interest in painting which is encouraging fans to get involved in expressing themselves artistically.

Famous faces such as Beyonce, Sir Paul McCartney and Pierce Brosnan have all come out as aspiring artists and declared their love for painting and drawing using art supplies.

Pop star Beyonce revealed a passion for painting as she believes the process to be therapeutic and she enjoys interpreting the results.

Brosnan trained as a commercial artist and pursued a career in art as an illustrator before going into acting but he rediscovered his passion for art supplies in the late eighties and now spends much of his free time between film shoots painting.

Sir Paul did not start properly painting until he was forty as he felt inhibited by his lack of formal art training despite winning a prize for a drawing he did as a teenager but he is now happy to paint regularly.

Jonathan Church, a supermarket spokesman, told the Daily Mail that sales of paint brushes and sketch books have been boosted by a growing number of people looking to get in touch with their creative side.

He said: 'We put the increase in the last twelve months down to more and more Brits taking up creative hobbies such as painting. Taking up art as a hobby means costs are relatively low but families can spend hours together taking part.'

Mr Church also told the publication that more and more families are looking to take part in activities that are inclusive of all age groups and abilities and most importantly do not break the bank during tough economic times.

"We know entertaining yourself and your family on a budget has become more important than ever to our customers over the last year. Hobbies such as painting are ideal because the materials cost small amounts to buy but will go a long way."

Mr Church went onto say that he expected a further increase in art supplies sales as Britain enjoys learning to get more creative.
