Modal Exciters Are Part Of Modern Life

A Modal exciter and modal excitation is the rather technical term for equipment which measures the amount of movement in structures before they are even built. Indeed, this science has become so necessary that a whole industry has grown up around it.

What this equipment actually does is to measure the 'chatter' from parts of the machine in question that rattle when they are used to full capacity. This sounds a little odd for sure but basically what it does is to measure how much movement it is so that the experts can work out ways to counter this effect.

This is particularly necessary in engines where any kind of vibration could actually break apart over some time. Imagine the screw of a huge tanker in full force pushing the ship forward. If the drive shaft shakes or rattles around too much it is bound to weaken the metal over time. A cracked drive shaft is not only dangerous; it could also put the lives of people on board at risk.

Similarly, bridges which span inlets or rivers must undergo many tests before they get to the building stage. The effects of wind and the weather must be ascertained as well as the effects of the weight of traffic on the bridge itself. If this is a suspension bridge, any movement around the cables will surely cause a weakness in the structure. With the weather and the weight of the traffic together, the effect is multiplied so these pressures must be worked out well before anyone is allowed onto it.

The machines which measure the chatter can pick up most frequencies. This frequency will translate into how much give there is in the machine or structure and should point the way to answering how to fix the problem. If anyone has heard that high pitch hum in machinery which sounds slightly different from normal, this is the chatter that the machines will pick up.

This kind of system has many uses of course, but perhaps some of the most important will include weapons and missile sites. Missile silos and cooling towers for nuclear production are two of the most dangerous places for sure, but then most countries have them to protect themselves from invasion by aggressors.

However, this kind of process actually touches on most of our lives without us realizing it at all. The motor industry uses it on car engines, the construction industry uses it on any kind of machines used on building sites and even power generators will be tested too to make sure that all parts are working in sync.

Every year, more and more uses are being found for this kind of equipment and it all points the way for a safer and more secure future for all of us.
