Are Online Tests Better Than Written Tests?

Bespoke online tests are tests, containing multiple choice and/or short answer questions, that employers can use to determine whether a potential employee would be an asset to their business. While filling out an online application or submitting a resume, job seekers may also be required to take a test to assess their skills, experience, and potential success with a company. This will help narrow a business's search for great prospects and ensure that they are making beneficial hiring decisions. However, while many professionals agree that these tests are useful, they are unsure if an online test or test taken in person would produce the best results.

The Disadvantages of Online Tests:

One of the main disadvantages of Bespoke online tests is that one can never be certain if a prospect completed the test without the help of others. It is possible that a test taker had help from a friend or family member, which improved their results. If the job seeker were asked to take the test in person, they would be much less likely to ask for outside help.

Another disadvantage of online tests is that job seekers may suffer from computer problems while taking the test. A great prospect may find that the test will not load on their computer, may accidentally submit the test early, find it impossible to go back to a question, or have other difficulties. This can cause a company to lose an experienced and well-suited candidate.

The Advantages of Bespoke Online Tests:

There are also many advantages to Bespoke online tests. One of the main advantages is the convenience that these tests provide. Employers can ask job seekers to take these tests while submitting their resume. Therefore, instead of sorting through hundreds of resumes, employers will only need to consider resumes from those that excelled on their assessment. Additionally, instead of manually grading tests, online tests produce automatic results. This will reduce the time an employee has to spend deciphering an interviewee's handwriting and help to maximize time for other projects.

Online tests are also beneficial as they can be completed from home. Instead of reviewing a job seeker's resume, setting up a testing time, and requiring that an interviewee take the test in person, employers can ask that these assessments be taken during the application process. This means that an employer will not need to meet with a prospect that does not pass their assessment, which also saves time and simplifies the hiring process.

Written tests are messy, inconvenient, and quite frankly, a waste of time and paper. Employers will find themselves wasting their time setting up testing periods for unsuitable prospects, while job seekers will be wasting their time commuting to and from a test, required for a job that they may not even be qualified for. Additionally, a traditional paper test can easily become lost, while an online test is more easily accessible. Many offices prefer to keep the clutter to a minimum and would rather computerize unnecessary paper documents.

Bespoke online tests essentially help employers make better hiring decisions. When job seekers are asked to answer questions regarding personality traits, future goals, past experiences, and other important topics, they are forced to examine themselves and answer truthfully, as most individuals will be unsure of the "right" answer. This will help an employer choose great candidates, while saving time and making the search for successful employees as pleasant as possible.
