Most everyone these days has a television. In fact, most people have multiple TV's in their home and typically this is coupled with satellite or cable to get the most options for channels. Likewise, most people these days also have personal computers or PC's. With today's technology it is possible to watch television shows, movies, concerts, music videos and sporting events online. But, why would anyone opt to watch these on their PC as opposed to their TV?
- Online shows are often available at your convenience. You do not have to worry about setting a DVR to record a program when you are not around or about missing a program you forgot about. - You do not have to be home to watch online. You can be mobile and still watch your favorite shows even if you are travelling or at work. - Most online shows are free. You do not have to subscribe to a service in order to access your favorite shows or waste money on shows and channels you never use. - If you want to watch adult only shows you have better security and privacy options as opposed to watching them on your living room TV and trying to watch out for the kids. - You can control the access your children have to particular sites and shows with much more sophisticated parental controls than what is typically available via your TV, cable or satellite provider. - You can easily multi task. If you like to watch TV while working, it is very convenient to do so on your PC. If you have dual monitors this is an especially attractive option as you can do your work in one monitor and watch the other. - TV networks have censorship requirements. Online, you can access uncensored versions of shows you may not be exposed to with regular cable or satellite TV. - You have access to online news programs and specials that would not make it to TV. Funding and regulations are a deterrent for some high quality programming. Without having to pay high costs to air on TV you can be exposed to world views you may not have access to on TV. - If you are travelling abroad you will still have access to local programming from your home town. - You can search for shows and videos based on topic as opposed to simply the title of the show. If, for example, you are in the mood for some comedy but you have no specific show in mind, you can do a broad search and come up with some hidden gems in the form of funny videos, local comedians and amateur video and home movies. - If you are travelling you can watch local news programs prior to leaving. You can get a feel for the area and even more importantly, check the weather from local stations. - There are many more niche channels and programs available online even on some obscure topics. While there has to be a mass market for niche channels such as home and garden, you can find many more programs on a specific topic, even unpopular ones, online.
One of the disadvantages many people cite regarding watching programming on a PC over a TV is the size of the screen. Most people do not have a 47 inch computer monitor. But, you can easily hook your PC to your TV monitor; get all the advantages of watching online while using your big screen TV monitor. If you enjoy quality programming and want diversity at much less expense, consider using your PC to watch your favorite series, music videos, sports, movies and concerts.
