The Differences Between Memory Foam Mattresses and Spring Mattresses

When shopping for a new bed, most people focused solely on the frame, concentrating on how it will look with the other bedroom furniture, completely overlooking the mattress, simply choosing the cheapest or most available option. However, putting as much time, if not more, into shopping for the mattress as you do into shopping for the bed frame is important because it is the mattress that you will be sleeping on. A bad mattress can cause many problems, from a poor night's sleep to back pain and doing research and putting time into shopping for a mattress can ensure that you will avoid these problems. It is also important to think about what time of mattress you would like: a mattress with springs or one that uses memory foam technology.

When debating whether to purchase a spring mattress or a memory foam mattress, the differences seem obvious. A spring mattress uses a spring zone as the source of support, using a network of different coil springs to support the sleeper. The springs are hidden beneath wool or latex padding that keeps the springs from being felt through the mattress. Foam mattresses, on the other hand, do not use springs for the source of support. Instead, these mattresses rely on visco elastic foams that respond to body temperature in order to create a comfortable sleeping environment. Because the foam molds to the form of the sleeper, it creates a mattress that is more tailored to the sleeper, which provides a better night's sleep without fear of waking up with aches and pains.

Spring mattress are a more traditional form of mattress and have been popular for decades. Spring mattresses offer firmness and support and that firmness provides good spinal alignment. One of the benefits of a spring mattress is that it does not need a foundation and take up very little space because of this fact. They are also very easy to maintain and require very little upkeep. Another benefit to spring mattresses is the cost: on average they are cheaper to purchase and maintain and are more available.

Foam mattresses, on the other hand, have been gaining popularity within the last several years, as technology has become more advanced and research from studies have become more wide spread. On a whole, foam mattresses provide more support for the sleeper and provide more support for the body overall. Foam mattress provide a better sleep experience because the foam supports the body and relieves pressure points. The foam also absorbs shock and movement, so the movement of one person on the bed does not disturb the other person. Foam mattresses also have a longer life but are more costly to maintain.

The personal preferences of the sleeper are, as always, the most important thing to consider. Some do not like the foam mattress because of the very fact that the mattresses respond to body temperature and can make the sleeper feel as though they are sinking into the mattress, making it difficult to move. Others do not like the traditional spring mattress because they are rigid, stiff and lumpy. Research and shopping around are always the best ways to ensure you get a quality product that is right for.
