The Importance of Self Storage Security

When searching for the right storage unit in your area, price is probably your number one concern. While price should definitely have an effect on what company you choose, the security features should be concern number two. Everyone takes safety measures in his home to protect belongings, so why shouldn't you take precautions for the items you store? There are reports every single day about storage units that were broken into. Before you "move-in," always take the time to learn about the facility's security features.

Take notice if the facility has fencing around the storage units. Most fences will be either metal or complete brick walls. Metal fences are easy to hop or cut through. A complete brick wall will not only make breaking in harder, it will also keep unwanted eyes from scoping out the units. No wall or fence is complete without some form of coded access gate. Not only will the unwanted be kept out, a control pad can keep a record of everyone who enters the facility, including what time he or she entered the storage unit. A more advanced facility will give you a code that will only allow you to enter the floor or hallway of your storage unit.

Alarms are a must-have. They are the best way to alert your local police station. However, some will simply sound when there is a break-in so it's a good idea to ask if the police will also be notified. If the facility has a fire alarm, this has to be connected to the fire or police department. Although not as common, motion sensors can be hooked up to alarms, lighting, or both. A light will turn on when motion is detected and will sound the alarm. Always check that the entire property is well lit. Try to only visit your self storage during the day, just to be extra safe.

Almost every single storage facility will require you to supply your own lock, which is to your advantage. Sometimes the warehouse operator will ask that you provide a list of everyone you give a copy of the key to. Find out the rules for allowing other people to access your storage unit before the security guard has an unpleasant rendezvous with your brother. While we're on the topic of security guards, some will have guards on duty 24 hours a day - which will most likely bump up the cost of your unit. Others may only have a manager who doubles as a guard.

There should be at least one security camera by the front gate to monitor everyone who goes inside. Multiple security cameras, of course, are ideal. If there are cameras, ask if they are continually being monitored or if they are simply for use in case of an incident. Lastly, hallway intercoms are a great safety feature if you need to call for help.

As theft increases, more and more storage facilities are upgrading their security and using new technology. You deserve peace of mind when you store your possessions. Choose a public storage unit that won't skimp on protection.
