Having a fire pit will add beauty and drama to any outdoor space. Fire pits are also a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors with your friends and family any time of the year. However, as much fun as gathering around a fire pit can be, there are a number of fire sense safety tips you should remember so that your experiences will be safe as well as memorable. 1. First, make sure that you can use a fire pit in your neighborhood before you purchase or build one. 2. Next, before you use your fire pit for the first time, make sure to thoroughly read the manual that comes with it. And, if you have any questions at all, call the manufacturer to get your answers before you use the fire pit. 3. Always put on a pair of safety gloves whenever you handle a hot fire pit. 4. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Periodically check to make sure that it is in perfect working order. Make sure that it isn't anywhere close to its expiration date. If you don't have a fire extinguisher make sure that you have a bucket of water and/or a nearby garden hose that can be easily turned on. 5. Invest in a set of fire handling tools. These and the fire safety gloves will allow you to work more safely with your fire. 6. Never put a fire pit in an enclosed area because if it will not be properly ventilated and the fumes can be very harmful. 7. Place your fire pit in an open area that is away from any hanging branches and dry grass. Make sure that it is on a steady surface. 8. Don't overload the fire pit with too much wood. Otherwise the fire may get out of control. 9. Only use your fire pit when the air is calm and the land is moist. You could unknowingly cause a fire if sparks become wind-blown and ignite some dry grass or timber. Invest in a fire screen to help prevent this from happening. 10. When you start your fire start it small. Use only the fire starters that your fire pit manufacturer recommends to start your fires. Do not ever use gasoline to start a fire. 11. Do not allow children near your fire pit and never leave a fire unattended. 12. Make sure that the fire is completely extinguished when you are finished enjoying your fire pit. Consult our owner's manual to find out the proper way to extinguish the fire in your particular fire pit. When you use a fire pit safely it will extend your enjoyment of your backyard and patio for many months throughout the year.
