Desktop computers are becoming a thing of the past these days just like cell phones are taking over landlines. Even if you have a desktop; laptops are still very useful things to have. It is sometimes very difficult to get homework done or work done if you are cooped up in a house or apartment. It can be nice to get out to a cafe or coffee shop and change the scenery a little bit. If this is possible, it is a good idea to have a laptop. A lot of restaurants like that even have wireless that you can use. You can buy a used laptop or a refurbished laptop if you cannot afford one full price.

To have a laptop and a desktop is a very good idea because if anything goes wrong with the laptop, you can back your files up to the desktop and vice versa. However, many people travel these days and there is no point in having a computer at their house because they use their laptop for everything anyway. It is so convenient to have something portable that you can have whenever you want that no one cares to even purchase a desktop anymore.

There are however many advantages to having a desktop. First of all, the internet can be much faster when it is plugged in rather than on wireless. They are also much more reliable and there are not as many problems with them because you cannot drop them as easily as a laptop. When things are smaller and portable, they can have things spilt on them or they can be dropped. There is a much greater chance that they get damaged.

Desktops are also much more reliable in the fact that they do not crash as easily as laptops. Since laptops are much newer technology, not all the problems have been sorted out and it seems that there are more internal as well as external problems with the portable computers. They are very handy pieces of equipment to have, but you should always buy the warrantee on them because you never know what might happen. Desktops do not get damaged very easily because they are not being transported everywhere with you.

It is possible to have a stationary computer and a portable one. It actually might be a good idea. You can store your files on the desktop and back it up because it will hold a lot more memory than your laptop and then you can just use your laptop for your current projects and assignments. It is also less of a hassle to use the stationary one while you are at home so that you do not have to get out the charger and worry about the computer running out of battery. There are advantages to both but if you do not want to deal with the desktop if you travel a lot, move a lot, or find it to be a nuisance to upkeep, a laptop will work just find. Just remember to back up your files.
