One problem that is most commonly associated with getting older is worsening eyesight. In fact, at some point, nearly everyone deals with an issue know as presbyopia. While it technically doesn't only target the older popular, it does affect people at an increased rate starting at 40 years of age. Essentially, your eye can no longer accommodate different powers, which is what determines how well you see different differences and even in different lightings. While there will still may be certain situations in which your eyes will still provide 20/20 vision, they are rare. Fortunately, you don't have to settle for thick glasses, rather you can now take advantage of contact lenses specifically designed to compensate for this problem.

Traditionally, bifocals or even trifocals were the only solution for presbyopia. However, as more research and development was done in the area of eye care, a variety of different techniques were introduced. Of the multiple options available, two have stood out as the most popular. Both are types of contact lenses and are known as mono-vision and multi-focal.

If you currently use or will need to use bifocal glasses, then multi-focal contact lenses will likely be your best option. With bifocals, you would look through a certain section to see far away and a different section to look up close. With contacts, this obviously isn't option because they are not large enough or mobile enough for you to be able to actively choose which areas to look through. This means that you will be looking through all of the different powers simultaneously. Keep in mind that multi-focal lenses could be like bifocals with a near and far power or could be trifocals, which include near, far, and mid range vision correction.

Regardless of which type of contact lenses you need, they all work using the same basic principle: simultaneous vision. This means that your eye will seeing light from near, mid-range, and far away all at the same time. Because of this, it will likely take your brain a week or two to adjust to this new type of input. However, it is normally a short term issue that will resolve itself. However, it is important to keep in mind that some optometrists believe that these are not as effective as glasses because you do not have the ability to choose which lens to look through.

Just because you are aging, doesn't mean that you need to advertise it with thick bifocals. When presbyopia becomes a problem, instead of turning to bulky glasses, consider using a good fitting pair of contact lenses instead. While you have a variety of different types to choose from, they all seem to have a very similar success rate. As always depending on your specific condition, your optometrists will be able to tell you which type will be best for your situation. From there, you will have a number of different brands to choose from. Aging gracefully is more important today than ever before, people are living longer and looking better every year. There is no reason not to age gracefully and opting for contact lenses is an excellent starting point.
