Help your Kid Stand up to the Class Bully

Most experience being teased by a sibling or friend. This is normal and harmless if done in a playful and friendly way, wherein both kids think it's funny. But teasing and joking can become harmful if it is hurtful, condescending, insulting, and unkind. This is what people call, bullying. If you suspect that your kid is being bullied in school, you have to take the necessary actions to stop these. Bullying, which can be anything from name-calling to practical jokes to threats and hitting, should be taken seriously as this can have an adverse effect on a child physically, psychologically, and emotionally. Below, you will find some ways on how to help your kid stand up to the class bully.

Know the signs

It's easier if your kid would tell you about the problem right away. But if he won't open up, there are certain warning signs that would tell you that your kid is being bullied in school. The most primary thing to be on the lookout for are bruises and injuries. Don't easily believe your kid even if he tells you that he just got injured in physical education because if the bruises or injuries are recurrent, it's a sign that there is something wrong. You can also notice signs of anxiety, loss of enjoyment, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, lack of usual enthusiasm for school, and so on. Talk to your kid gently and nicely if any of these signs arise.

Assert your kid

If you are able to confirm that your kid is being bullied in school, you have to do your part in asserting your child. Children who are bullied suffer from low self-esteem. The lower their self-confidence gets the more they are bullied, the more they are bullied the lower their self-confidence gets. It's a vicious cycle that you can stop by asserting your kid. Reinforce your kid's self-esteem by making sure that he looks good at all times and he's fit and healthy. Be sure to praise your kid for the things he does especially those where he excel in so that he would feel good about himself. If he does, there is lesser chances of him letting the bullying affect him.

Enroll your kid in a self defense class

Enrolling your kid in a self defense class has numerous benefits. For one, he will learn how to defend himself. If a bully keeps on hurting him physically, he won't be able to do that anymore if your kid learn self-defense tactics to protect himself. Once the bully finds out about his fighting prowess, he will stay away from your kid. Of course, you have to emphasize on your kid that martial arts is just for self defense and not for picking fights.

Let your kid know that you support him fully

Going to school and confronting the bully yourself will do more harm than good. Your kid would want to have your support but he wouldn't want you fighting his battles. Doing this would only make your kid look weak and encourage bullies to pick on him even more. What you should do instead is to help your kid in a different way such as by talking discreetly to the principal about this issue or by transferring your kid to another school where he will be accepted by his classmates.
