Contractors Choosing Electric Ranges

Whether you own an electric or gas oven range, some repairs can be done at home. Notice that many of the parts can be taken apart and restored in a simple manner. Often, the problem of supply and ignition can be present in gas burners and ovens. On the other hand, faulty heating elements are the ones that affect electric ranges.

Newer gas ranges have an electric ignition system instead of a pilot light. For this type, the element builds up heat and glows whenever electricity runs through it. The heat is responsible for lighting the gas. These systems are sealed therefore efforts to adjust or repair are futile. If the system fails, do not attempt to fix. A professional service provider should be contacted. It is commonly found under the cooktop of the range. In some, the top needs to be lifted so that the fuse or circuit breaker can be located. Repairs can be easily done in both electric and gas oven ranges. For gas ranges, most of the problems are caused by the gas supply and ignition. While for electric ranges, it is usually due to faulty heating elements. Whenever repairs need to be done, the power supply must be turned off for both types of units. For electric types it's best to unplug the wire. If the unit has additional units like an oven light or self-cleaning feature, it's possible that there might be another fuse. Always consider that there might be a blown fuse, replace by unscrewing the old fuse and installing a new one with the same electrical rating. For a fuse with a 15-am rating, push the reset button that is found in the control panel.

Food usually gets spilled on burner blocs causing them to get clogged. These can be cleaned using soapy water and a moist cloth, but remember to remove the top ring to access the ports and clean using a pin. Electric ranges use 240-volt current to heat the cook-top burners and the oven ; they require dedicated 50 amp electrical circuits. Similar to oven thermostats are burner switches since they have sensing bulbs attached to them. It suspected of being faulty, do not repair on your own. Remove the bulb by prying it off with a screwdriver. Bulbs are usually clipped to the cabinet. Bring it to a professional service establishment for testing. They can assess whether it needs replacement or not. Electric range heating elements are easy to replace for as long as power is received. Check all the cords and outlet first before resetting any tripped circuit breakers in the panel. Most elements are joined together with a terminal block in the side part of the element well. They can be removed by unscrewing or pulling the element from its connection. Test using a VOM set to R x 1 scale, the value should result to somewhere between 40 and 125 ohms. If the value is extremely high, the element should be changed. When element switches are broken, call a professional to do the job. Immerse the burner in detergent solution and leave to dry. Consider ranges that offer extras, such as a modular cooktop that allows you to easily substitute a grill or griddle plate for a set of burners. Depending on your chosen or planned layout of the kitchen , you may need to purchase a unit with a built in downdraft vent. As well if you entertain frequently , or your mealtimes are often staggered , you may find a "warming drawer" particularly useful . This unit , which replaces the storage drawer at the bottom of the range , keep prepared food warm for up to two hours. Gas ranges use natural or liquid propane gas to fuel the cooktop burners on the stove and the oven as well. They require a 120 volt, 20 amp outlet to power the oven light , timers and flame-ignition modules. Overall it has been estimated that gas ranges with electronic ignition cost less than 1/2 as much to operate as electric units. Additionally improved designs make newer models a snap and breeze to clean and clean up.

If the electric range get power but is not functioning, there might be a blown fuse. Usually, more than one fuse or circuit breakers is present when the unit has extra features like an oven light and range heating elements. Replace the blown fuse by unscrewing the old one. Choose the same type of fuse with the same electrical rating. It is no recommended to use a fuse with more than a 15-amp rating. If the electric range has a circuit breaker, push the reset button to repair. It is commonly found on the control panel. Using a screwdriver, remove the bulb that is attached to the cabinet. Remove it and have a professional test done. If it can be still be changed, replace the new switch in the same manner the old one was attached.

When an electric range's heating element burns out, it can be easily changed. All types of ranges come in a variety of configurations : slide in , free standing and lastly "drop-in".

Free standing ranges have finished side panels - often currently in 2010 polished stainless steel. This is done so that one or both sides can be exposed and present a most attractive cosmetic appearance.

Slide-in ranges are designed to easily and conveniently fit into the space between two base cabinets , and so have unfinished sides.

Drop-in ranges fit into special cabinets that are finished to match surrounding cabinets. Reset circuit breaker if it is tripped. If power is available, proceed to check on the top element which is commonly connected to a block in the side of the well. Access to the terminal block is by lifting the element and removing the metal pan under it. For a screw-type element, remove the screws that hold the wire. Ranges which are also known simply as "stoves", combine an oven and cooktop in one unit. Since a range often costs less and takes up less space than two separate units its a good option if either your budget or space is limited. The first step in buying a new range is deciding what best suits your kitchen and cooking style and styles. The first and most obvious question is the source of power - gas , electricity or both. Traditionally gas burners have been favored over electric coils, because they allow for more immediate and fine control of heat. Electric ovens are known to cook more evenly than gas and they tend to dry out food less. While these advantages and disadvantages still apply to most "conventional" ranges , technology and computerized electronics are beginning to overcome the long standing limitations of each power source type; if not, the reading will be very high. When burnt food surrounds the gas range burners, clogging can be a problem. This is usually remedied by wiping the area with detergent solution and cleaning the ports with the use of a pin. Toothpick can break and dislodge itself therefore, it is not advisable to use. If the burner is completely covered, turn the power supply off both electric and gas ranges. Mix a mild detergent with water and soak the burner, wipe it with a clean cloth, rinse and dry. When completely dry, turn on the power and adjust the knobs to produce a light blue tip. The light must be slightly rounded and quiet.
