What Can You Do About Bed Bugs?

Everybody would like to think that bedtime is one of the safest rituals of the day. All you have to do is lie down, pull the covers over your head, and wait for sleep to claim you. By the morning, you will be refreshed, ready to tackle whatever comes next. But for some unlucky souls, going to bed may be the last thing they want to do.

Odds are good that you have heard it on the news in recent times that bed bugs are becoming an increasing problem. And it does not stop at home. They can be found just about any place there is a bed, from hotel rooms to college dorm bunks. People are panicking, and many are demanding something to be done about the situation, whether the problem is truly real or not.

However, no matter where you stand on the hysteria, there is no reason to lose sleep at night, worrying that something could be crawling around your sheets. All you have to know is what the signs are of a bed bug infestation, and how you can take care of the problem.

Perhaps the most telling sign of a bed bug problem is marks on the body of the person who sleeps in the bed. Although you may think the red bumps on your legs came from that recent camping trip, these marks would appear overnight, and not be there the day before. Another surefire sign of bed bugs are black or red dots on the mattress, sheets or head board. Finally, bed bugs give off a distinct smell, so if none of the other signs convince you, the odor should be enough.

But if you have them, how can you get rid of them? If you can afford it, the first thing you should do is get rid of your current mattress; throwing it out is a good way to ensure that this does not happen again. However, if you do not have the funds, it is acceptable to vacuum the mattress and place a cover over it. Everything in the immediate area, including the sheets, should be washed in warm water.

To be truly cautious of the situation, however, you need to consider hiring somebody to take care of the insect control in your bed and throughout your home. With professional help you will be able to get rid of the bed bugs efficiently and effectively and you will not need to worry about the pests coming back. The extermination services may even be able to point out solutions you would never have thought about. It is fine to try to handle pest control on your home by yourself, but when it turns really serious, you need to venture out and get the help you need to be thorough.
