Back Braces For Back Pain - Lower Back Support Brace Options

Back braces are effective for the treatment of spinal injuries, the prevention of spinal injuries and the alleviation of back pain. Not all back braces are ideal for treating back pain that is already existent. Speaking to a physician is necessary in properly diagnosing the cause of the back pain before relying on a brace to alleviate it. There are multiple options available when it comes to back braces for back pain, and no single solution for all back pain problems. This means that working closely with a physician is necessary in getting the right help for a back pain problem.

One option when it comes to back braces for back pain is a rigid plastic brace. These braces are prescribed to deal with lower back instability and lower back pain. While standard back supports can provide rigidity and stability, they cannot meet every need. If a spine requires greater rigidity for support, then a rigid frame brace is generally the next best thing. These braces are stiff and form fitting, and they typically involve the use of rear uprights conforming to the lumbar spine and the pelvis. The lumbar spine is the lower spine. Thoracic bands may also be involved.

These braces may also utilize fabric straps to create pressure from front to back. There are several types of rigid back braces for back pain, including the Raney Flexion Jacket, the Chair-back brace and the Williams brace. Williams braces do not have vertical uprights located in the middle, which allows for some flexion or bending. The chair back brace keeps the spine in a neutral position, immobilizing it there. Instead, it reduces revolving and sideways motion in the patient's lower spine. The Raney Flexion Jacket is specifically designed to hold the patient's back in a neutral tilt, because this reduces lumbar lordosis as a result.

Many back pain issues can and will benefit from the use of back braces. Patients should not self-diagnose their back pain, nor rely on regular back braces. The right back braces for back pain are prescribed or indicated by a trained physician, only after the patient has been properly diagnosed. The physician will rely on X-ray scans, CAT scans and MRI scans to determine the cause of the back pain first, as an improperly indicated back brace can lead to greater problems rather than an alleviation of pain or other symptoms like inflammation in the back.
