Bunk Beds - Rules To Assist With Injury Prevention

Bunk beds can work out very well if space in a room is at a premium. Make sure you enforce recommended safety measures to prevent injuries. The following safety tips should be considered, whether you are sleeping in a bunk bed, or if you have children using bunk beds.

Never let small kids to use a bunk bed

Kids under the age of six aren't recommended to have bunk beds. If you have a set in one room of the house, don't leave children unattended in that room, as they may climb up or play on the bunks. Half of these accidents are suffered by kids below five years old and most bunk-bed related accidents result from falling.

The top bunk should not be used by more than one person at a time

One person should only sleep on the upper bunk unless of course the upper bunk is a double bed. You don't want to run the risk of having your top bunk fall down, so don't put two people on a top bunk that was built for one person.

Items should not be hung anywhere on the bed

Many are tempted to hang belts, jump ropes, belts, hooks and other items from bunks, but these can increase the risk of strangulation and other accidents. Strictly tell your kids to place their stuff in the appropriate place and not hang those anywhere on the bed.

When having guests, remember to repeat your safety rules

You must go by the safety rules and regulations which you might have framed as regards the bunk bedding. If your kids are having some friends sleep over, tell them the rules and remind them to follow them at all times.

You need to be sure the top bunk is protected with bed rails

By design, the top bunk of the bed can pose a potentially dangerous situation for children. Ensure that top bunk is provided with protective guardrails for safety purpose to avoid accidental fall. An opening between the guardrails for connecting the ladder should only be 15 inches at the most.

Make sure the guardrails can keep the mattress in place

Be sure the guardrails are sturdy enough to keep the mattress firmly in place, and that they are higher than five inches from its surface.

Get a mattress that is the right size for the bunks

One of the standard and basic rules of using a bunk bed is to use only a mattress that is the right size for it. Tiny mattresses should be avoided as they do not have firm grip. Conversely, the guardrails on the bed won't be able to hold up a mattress that's too large.

Check that the ladder is steady

The ladder should be sturdy enough to support the weight of your child and should not be obstructed with clothes, toys and other items.

As long as the owners of bunk beds are responsible for the way it's used, bunk beds are a rather effective solution to save space.
