I've really come to enjoy ornamental grasses in the yard. They can do a great job enhancing the beauty of the yard. And perhaps the best part about them is that they're generally very low maintenance. Like dwarf mondo grass for example. Growing up to about 6 inches in height, it spreads out slowly, filling in the areas around it with nice thick ground cover. Some of the best applications I've seen with dwarf mondo is along brick or stone walkways. The mondo grass grows in thick along the path, making a really beautiful contrast. And the fact that it's so thick and low maintenance make it a great addition to a yard.
Ornamental grasses are very different from one to the next, which means that you can use multiple varieties in the same yard. Dwarf mondo grass doesn't grow nearly as tall as other ornamental grasses, generally 3-5 inches. And it doesn't have vibrant colors like Japanese blood grass. It keeps to a tight ball and spreads out slowly around itself, growing slowly at first, but spreading faster once it becomes established. Dwarf mondo grass also likes a fairly shady location, much more than a lot of types of grasses. But like most grasses, it likes soil with good drainage that's slightly acidic. If you already have dwarf mondo grass, a nice way to give it a boost is to pour used coffee grounds on them and water them into the soil every one in awhile to help keep the acidity of the soil at a nice pH. Dwarf mondo grass is considered hardy and can grow well in most of the zones and regions of the United States. Dwarf mondo grass is also very low maintenance which is nice. As long as you plant it in good soil that has at least partial shade, it should take off slowly and begin to fill in the areas around itself.
Because of the fact that dwarf mondo is so lush and also low maintenance, people like to sometimes use multiple varieties in order to achieve a patterned effect with different colors. This can really make the yard look sharp along walkways and on road islands in public landscaping. If you get creative, I think you'll be surprised at what you come up with. As long as you install a nice border between them and so some occasional trimming here and there, the setup should be otherwise very low maintenance. After both of the sides grow in lush, it really will look sharp.
Like we said earlier, dwarf mondo grass is a top notch ground cover plant for brick and stone walkways. The low lying ground cover extends itself lightly over the edge of the pathway, which I think gives a really neat effect. One effect that I really enjoyed seeing was using dwarf mondo grass along a walkway, with medium sized shrubs behind, and then larger bushes or trees behind those against the house. Because the greenery gradually got taller as it went back toward the house, it gave off a very lush impression and made the whole display seem thick, yet well groomed.
