What Are Replica Watches Anyway?

[Valid RSS feed]  Category Rss Feed - http://www.articlesbacklink.com/rss.php?rss=32
By : Paul Wise

The best Replica Watches are fully functional copies of an original design by a famous manufacturer. They are colloquially used as synonyms for the term "fake watches," though purists consider fake watches to be mere props that only look the same but do not guarantee the same exact functionality. Some horologists, or watch fanciers and connoisseurs, accept replica watches as legitimate works, and are fascinated by the degree of verisimilitude achieved, whereas more sniff at them as imitations not worth collecting. For the layman, good replica watches are great deals because they cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars less than the real thing while working almost or even exactly the same. That is the reason why there is a thriving market in replica watches, one which doesn't seem likely to go away despite all the legal sanctions imposed on their manufacture.

In the world of replica watches, special terms apply. A "Swiss" does not refer to precision Swiss timekeeping but to the quality of the movement. A replica watch considered "Swiss" may or may not have its movement made in Switzerland, but is likely to offer the best make in terms of quality and value, constructed of materials similar to that employed for the genuine design it is meant to duplicate. As may be surmised, Swiss replica watches cost more than other kinds, sometimes including sapphire crystals and other original components.

Other terms denoting quality are "Asian" and "Japanese," but when it comes to replica watches it is hard to know just from the label alone. A "Swiss" may in fact be of a lower quality than an "Asian," as there are no real industry standards for an industry operating in the so-called gray economy! Thus the quality of replicas will vary greatly from watch to watch, no matter the term.

But such terms do tend to indicate prices, and so it is that those designated as bearing "Asian" or "Japanese" movements will often be less expensive than Swiss-labeled ones. Japanese and Asian replicas tend to use less expensive materials that can usually be of an inferior quality, but they are good enough for casual everyday wearing and so are extremely popular the world over. Of the two, Japanese replicas are esteemed much more highly than the ones called Asian, with slightly more attention paid to details, despite all the shortcuts taken in general. Asian replicas tend to be even lighter and flimsier, typically on offer for US$30 or less on the street, while Japanese replicas will be sold at a hundred and up, with Swiss variants selling for a couple of hundred or more.
