Of course, attending university doesn't protect anyone from harm due to sickness or injury. The wise student will take care to cover himself against such unforeseen circumstances. College students have many options when it comes to health insurance and some. Planning will be made simple if one is well informed of the available alternatives. Below is a list of ways you may be able to obtain health insurance: Insurance for health costs that is offered by the college A few colleges and universities make contracts with private insurance groups with an aim to offer health insurance plans for their students at cheap rates. Inquire at the admissions departments of local campuses to see whether they offer any such plans. It is also important that you ask what coverage you can take advantage of. It is important to make sure you have the right health care coverage in the event that you should need to see a doctor. An individual policy You can also buy an individual insurance policy if you can afford it. The fee for an individual policy is expensive, and you may be required to have a physical before getting coverage. Your parent's insurance If you are in need of health insurance and your parents have it as an option, ask them if you can remain under their coverage as a dependent child. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that was passed now allows dependent children to stay on their parents' health insurance until they reach the age of 26. However, children who are eligible for employer health coverage will not qualify. Examine your parent's plan to ensure that their coverage is not provided by an HMO. Full coverage for the policy will be given to the local residents or policy holders of their locality. Ex-employer offering group health insurance You may rely on the federal law named Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) which continues to provide group health insurance through employers and qualifies you to use that same health insurance, for at least 18 months, as long as you pay the full required premiums. Medicaid In the United States, Medicaid provides financial assistance for health related issues to people of lower income. If you already have extensive unpaid medical bills or if you have a permanent disability or if your family income and other resources are low, then Medicaid may be a good solution. State's insurance pool For those who can not purchase their own health insurance or are not eligible for Medicaid, some states offer special health plans. One should always have a proactive mindset when preparing for college because this period in one's life is formative for one's future. Simply having a health insurance policy may help to stave off health and medical problems that may change the course of your life, education, and future.
