How to Have the Perfect Christmas Dinner: Formal Dinnerware and Russ Berrie Toys

If you're hosting Christmas dinner this year, you have the honor of opening your home to your friends and family for a celebration of the end of the year and the winter holidays. There are lots of details to plan, however, and this article will help.

1. Food: Typically turkey, ham, sirloin, roast beef, quail and even lobster show up on Christmas dinner. What you eat depends primarily on your budget and how many people you're feeding. A ham is a classic Christmas meal that's easy to make and feed lots of people with. Many of the same sides you see at Thanksgiving are had at Christmas also, such as green beans, stuffing with gravy, mashed potatoes, corn and squash. For dessert, pumpkin and apple pies are tasty, and usually a heavy chocolate cake in accompaniment for those with sweet teeth. You may even see some latkes and Jewish deserts on the table, if you extend your hospitality to your Jewish neighbors.

2. Servingware: Formal dinnerware is appropriate at Christmastime, especially if you're having family from far away visit. You may want to invest in some new Godinger formal dinnerware; they have fine crystal and silver products. If you're looking for something a tad more casual, Spose makes fine dinnerware too.

3. Music: It's good to have music quietly playing in the background. If you want to try for a more sophisticated repast, classical music from Westminster Choir is great, and Handel's Messiah is a Christmas favorite thanks to the famous, "Hallelujah" chorus.

4. Guests: There's nothing wrong with asking your guests to bring specific items. They will be glad to help, and will take pride when people compliment their dish or their bottle of wine.

5. Presents: You want to have some presents for the kiddies, and while they may want the latest "cool" toy, younger children will always appreciate a fine Gund or Russ Berrie stuffed animal or puzzle. Toy cars, horses, dolls, nature, arts and crafts, and even baby toys are made by these classic toy makers and are always appreciated by the young. Typically the children are allowed to open one present before they go to sleep, but don't let them open the biggest or best one - you want to make the present a teaser to keep them excited for the present-opening in the morning.

In order to best pull off a successful Christmas dinner, it's important to plan ahead. You should know how many people are coming at least two weeks in advance; go to the grocery store a week before; clean your home and change the bedding two days before; and make as many dishes as you can the day before. That will save you valuable time the day of the feast, which is often held in the early or late afternoon. Good luck!
