It can be hard watching your parents age, but it is a natural part of life. There are certain ways, however, that can make taking care of them easier. Read on for tips on how to have mental tranquility. 1. Finances: Talk with your parents about their needs. If long term care is needed, it can be very expensive, anywhere from $40,000 to $80,000 annually. Medical bills and prescriptions can also be expensive. 2. Safety: Make sure that your parent's home is proofed for falls. Serious spills are bad news for the elderly, and are sadly common. There should be enough food in the cupboards, and if you can't go food shopping all the time for them, there are online grocery deliveries. Choose easier methods of doing things that were once simple, i.e. Velcro shoes instead of laces. 3. Driving: It can be hard to talk about, but elderly parents often have problems with their vision, and driving the way they used to. Senior driving classes and public transportations are options. If you think that driving must end, don't delay: if there are issues, consult a doctor. It's better to act fast rather than wait for an accident. 4. Incontinence: Dealing with this issue can be tricky. You don't want to cause unwanted embarrassment for your parent, but it needs to be addressed. Smile: It's important to treat your parent with tenderness, but the best medicine, as we all know, is laughter. Watch movies, make jokes, and smile. 6. Walk: Getting out of the house or nursing home and walking is very important. Not only does it provide exercise and release endorphins, but it is a great way to break the lonely habit of sitting by oneself. 7. Define: You need to understand your responsibilities. You may need to discuss them and formally organize them. But once you, you can feel better about your own life and not have to worry too much about your parent's. 8. Nursing Home: If your parent needs more help than you alone can provide, there are some different options. Among them is the nursing home. When looking for a quality nursing home, examine everything from the grounds to the food. To ensure that your parent is getting quality care, visit often and unexpectedly. Talk to the staff about ways you can help or about your parent's special needs. If you suspect any lack of care, act and document everything.
