How To Prevent Sports Injuries

By : Eva Judge

Few people engage in sports believing that they will become injured. Unfortunately, however, people do become injured each and every day. Many times, their injuries could have been avoided through the use of basic common sense measures. You can learn a few of the best ones by checking out the following information.

Tip #1: Follow the Rules -

Uninformed players are more likely to become injured while participating in sports. Before hitting the court or playing field, make sure that you know and understand all of the rules - then follow them. Some rules have been set for purposes of fair game play, while others have been purposely created to ensure safety of the players. To be safe, you should obey all of them.

Tip #2: Always Warm Up -

You are sure to put yourself at risk of a sports-related injury the minute you carelessly throw yourself into the game without a proper warm up. Make a warm-up session a part of your regular sports playing routine. After a while, it will become like second nature to you - and you will be able to avoid a lot of pulled muscles and other painful injuries.

Tip #3: Be in Shape -

All too often, otherwise sedentary people decide to play the occasional game of netball or other sports. If you are among these people, it is important that you are informed of the danger and greater possibilities of getting hurt when you are out of shape. Try to maintain a regular workout regimen so that you're always in fairly decent shape. In the end, you'll be able to avoid a huge number of injuries.

Tip #4: Don't Play when You're Tired or Hurting -

Always make sure that you get a good night's sleep before playing any sport. You make yourself vulnerable to injury when you get into the game with an overly fatigued body and with weakened defenses. Furthermore, don't participate in sports when you are injured or in pain. You'll only exacerbate the problem and could extend your injury by a considerable amount of time.

Tip #5: Don't Push Yourself Too Hard -

Sure, it can be tempting to play day after day of a sport. However, it's important to take a day or two off here and there. When you never give your body a rest, it becomes prone to more injuries.

Tip #6: Use Protective Gear and Equipment -

Wherever possible, make good use of protective gear and equipment. Such things are designed to keep injuries at bay and give you a much better chance of getting through a game unscathed. Even if you feel dorky or uncool wearing such things, it's a small price to pay for avoiding an injury - and your safety should always be your top priority.
