Acid Reflux Symptoms And How To Prevent Them

[Valid RSS feed]  Category Rss Feed - http://www.articlesbacklink.com/rss.php?rss=200
By : Barbara Thomson    It is when your stomach contents reenter the esophagus and to your throat that you suffer from acid reflux. This is a disease that can result in the damage of the esophagus because stomach digestive juices with hydrochloric acids return to the esophagus to irritate, inflame and even scar the esophageal wall over time. The condition is better understood when you understand acid reflux symptoms.

A burning type of pain that occurs in the mid chest section is the most predominant of acid reflux symptoms. This burning sensation attacks behind the breastbone, and the middle of the abdomen.

These symptoms of acid reflux may be experienced by some people on an occasional basis, and by some people on a daily basis. It is those who experience it on a daily basis that usually end up with complications because of the condition.

Adverse symptoms of acid reflux

Sometimes a person may react to this heart burn sensation by coughing or may experience a nauseous feeling. Difficulty in swallowing, chronic chest pains and inflammation on the esophageal lining are other acid reflux symptoms one may suffer from. Sometimes there may also be complaints of hoarse voices, voice change, recurrent earache and even sinusitis.

Once you recognize acid reflux symptoms, you have to start treating the problem as all untreated symptoms can lead to a much more serious problem. It can lead to stricture formation, esophageal ulcers, Barrett’s esophagus and even cancer of the esophagus.

These symptoms are better understood if you understand its causes. It is usually when the lower esophageal sphincter or LES relaxes while the rest of the esophagus is in motion that acid reflux occurs. Even inconsistencies of body parts and impaired removal of gastric reflux from the esophagus tend to contribute to acid reflux symptoms.

Wide range of treatment options

Obesity, pregnancy and smoking alleviates acid reflux. Even common foods like citrus fruits, chocolate, fat rich food, fried foods, garlic, onions, tomato based foods like pizza, chili and salsa and spicy items all contribute to acid reflux symptoms.

No matter if you suffer from mild, moderate or severe acid reflux; there is a wide range of treatment options available. Medications are the most common approach to treating acid reflux. They consist of antacids that are found in liquid and tablet form that tend to neutralize the acid in the stomach for speedy relief.

Surgery is the last alternative

Even over the counter H-2 receptor blockers are used by many to produce less acid in the stomach. Though these don’t provide quick relief from acid reflux, they last longer than acids. However some people avoid using this for its side effects like dizziness, dry mouth and bowel changes.

Once acid reflux symptoms lead to an inflamed esophagus, doctors usually prescribe prescription strength medication that has to be taken half an hour before food. However if required, doctors may consider surgery to treat acid reflux, when the patient does not respond to medications, has swallowing difficulties, has black stools and weight loss.
