You have finally decided to go on a trip to take a break from your life's daily hustle and bustle. It's good for you and your health. After all, you've been working so hard and you truly deserve a break. But before you think that having a vacation is all about the nicest things, you have to remember that it also entails some kind of work that comes in the form of planning and preparation. Preparing travel documents is one of the most important things that you need to accomplish prior to the trip. Knowing what you should prepare and what you should do would lessen the stress involved in this task. Here are some of the travel documents that you cannot leave home without.

Passport and Visas

Wherever your destination is you will need a valid passport, one that is not yet expired. Ideally, your passport should be at least six months away from being expired when you travel. If you're going out of the country, you may also need a visa depending on your destination. To get a visa, you need to apply for one at the consulate or embassy of the country located in your vicinity. For instance, if you are going to travel to Switzerland, you need to visit the Swiss Embassy in your location. It is important that you give yourself ample time for the visa and passport processing as these take time. Make sure to have the complete requirements for the visa application so you have better chances of getting your application approved.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is another travel essential that you need. Most visa applications require submission of a travel insurance policy with sufficient coverage. Some countries refuse entry if you do not have travel insurance even if you have the proper visa. It is also vital that you get the correct type of travel insurance for yourself. For example, if you don't have any medical insurance, it is imperative that you purchase visitors health insurance. Now if your trip is not about pleasure but about taking up education in a foreign land, you must obtain international student health insurance.

Airline Tickets and Hotel Accommodation

See to it that you triple check for these documents before you leave home. You won't be able to step in to the plane or stay at the hotel you booked a reservation for if you do not have the necessary travel documents with you. That is unless you have your computer or cellphone with internet that carry these documents digitally. Even so, you must have the hard copies of these documents to be on the safe side.

List of Important Phone Numbers

Many people neglect the importance of having a list of important phone numbers. But when the emergency arises, they wish they had it. Before you leave home, create a list of the phone numbers of who you should call in the event that travel documents or credit cards get lost. These include phone numbers of banks, credit card companies, insurance companies and so on. You must also have emergency phone numbers of your destination's hospitals, police stations, and so on. Finally, make a list of the phone numbers that you should call back home in case of an emergency. These include your immediate family, trusted friends, and reliable neighbors.
