The Age of College Online Tutoring

Just about everything we do is now done online. We do our shopping online, our banking, pay bills, chat with friends, and so much more. It's no surprise that your kids can now find college tutors online for just about every subject. The internet is flooded with various companies providing online tutoring, but it begs the question, "Is online tutoring better than conventional tutoring?"

College online tutoring certainly has its benefits. Probably the biggest allure of online tutoring is convenience. Most programs offer assistance throughout the day, making it a great choice for those who are juggling both school and work. Most of the time students will have a question while doing homework, but they have no one to turn to. It's not the best idea to call up your tutor at 11:30 pm. If they chose online tutoring, all they need to do is log on and immediately get help.

Traditional tutors will need you to make appointments which can be a hassle for those with busy schedules. The other convenience of online tutoring is being able to access your tutor right at home. However, this does have its drawbacks. You might feel more distracted at home or more inclined to cut a session short because you can simply log back on whenever you feel. If you made an appointment with your tutor in the school library two weeks ago, you're going to feel pretty bad about canceling your session.

Most online services offer several means of communication with students, including e-mail, chat rooms, and webcams. Being able to talk face to face is really important when learning and used to be the main advantage of conventional tutoring. Now that almost every computer comes with a webcam, each student can feel more connected to his tutor. However, if you need a college math tutor or an engineering tutor, talking in a chat room might be more awkward and you may want the physical presence of someone there to draw it out for you, literally and figuratively.

The rates for a traditional tutor vary but ultimately, they tend to be more expensive than online tutors since they are paid per hour. Many colleges offer tutoring programs but it can be difficult waiting for one to become available. However, if you can afford a personal tutor, it can be a very beneficial relationship. A student might feel more comfortable being around someone he knows and trusts. The student might feel less inclined to ask particular questions if he's been bounced around from one tutor to the next online. After a period of time, the tutor can become more aware of the difficulties a student has and cater more to his needs.

Despite the minor drawbacks of college online tutoring, it has become the popular choice. With lower rates and added convenience, traditional tutors are becoming more scarce. Actually, they're probably joining online tutor businesses instead with the increased demand. No matter which method you choose, it's important for all students to get the help they need and from individuals who are affluent in their respected fields.
