When you are at a Spanish immersion school in Buenos Aires, one experience that is not to be missed is spending time on an estancia. In case you aren't familiar with the term "estancia," the translation of this word is ranch.

This experience will complement your Spanish immersion program in Argentina, as you will not only spend time in a beautiful environment, but also learn a great deal about the historic traditions of living and working on a ranch.

While a hacienda can produce agricultural products, an estancia is just dedicated to producing livestock. These ranches can be quite extensive and are a major part of the economy in Argentina. Right outside of Buenos Aires, there are various estancias that you can visit. Not only do they welcome visitors, but they seek to make your stay relaxing, educational and fun.

If you arrange to spend the night at an estancia, you will learn all about the traditions of living and working on a ranch. Another Spanish term that you will soon become familiar with is "gaucho.' The gaucho is the equivalent to North America's cowboy. At an estancia, you can follow gauchos in their daily work and learn about their lifestyles.

Additionally, this experience will help you with your knowledge of the Spanish language. You will be hearing people speak in their native language and you will be part of the action. For example, typical activity is to sit around the fire and sing folk songs.

Other activities on estancias include fishing, bird watching, hiking, horseback riding and boat trips. Some estancias even offer demonstrations on sheep shearing and animal maintenance. The entire experience will likely be one of the most memorable weekends of your entire Spanish immersion program in Argentina.

It is important to point out that estancias don't just offer rugged quarters. In fact, some accommodations are rather elegant. You will be able to enjoy fancy dining rooms, spacious terraces and beautiful scenery. Of course, the food is also a big part of the experience. Eating steak this way will be something you'll never forget!

The entire experience can be very relaxing and rejuvenating. After all, you are on some of the most beautiful terrain in the world. Many of these estancias are only within an hour's drive of your Spanish school in Buenos Aires, yet you will likely feel like you are a world away.
