It is the piece of furniture necessary for every living room, and yet so often it is forgotten. It is usually found right there dab smack in the middle of everything, yet it is constantly overlooked. It is not the focus, nor is it the most celebrated of furniture. And yet no living room should be considered complete without it. I'm speaking, of course, about the coffee table. Let's be honest; when you think of your living room, the coffee tables aren't the first item of furniture you think of. Whether it's the sofas and loveseats, entertainment centers and flat screen televisions, or even that tiny countertop you leave the TV remote and house phone on in-between the parts of your sectional sofas, the fact is that the coffee table is rarely the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about your living room. And that's exactly what makes it the most underrated piece of furniture in the room. Have you ever had the misfortune of being in a living room that didn't have a coffee table? It's the most awkward living arrangement possible! It's a surprising case of "you don't know what you've got till it's gone," as you'll search for a place to put a glass, or your wallet, or cell-phone, or any other possession you may have on you at the time... or even just a place to rest your feet. (Of course, we're not suggesting all coffee tables double as footrests, but in this writer's opinion, the best ones always are. Same goes for the ottoman that can double as a coffee table.) If the items in your living room were members of a sports team, the coffee table wouldn't be the star player with the big contract whose jersey every kid wants to wear and gets himself onto ESPN's SportsCenter every night. That would be the entertainment centers role.... The flashy thing that everybody likes to talk about. Nor would it be the trusted old veteran that the team would always lean on, deferring to the All-Star Player/ entertainment centers for the majority of moments, but coming up with the big play when you absolutely needed it. That would be the sectional sofas role...old reliable. You don't show off your sectional sofas like you do an entertainment center, but it's still vital and its importance is never underrated. No, if the coffee table was a member of a sports team, it be that first guy off the bench who knows his roles and plays it to perfection. He's the quiet offensive lineman you never hear from, because he always does his job and never makes mistakes. He's the guy hitting at the bottom of your lineup, not necessarily filling up the stat sheet, but getting that sacrifice fly and hitting the runs in without ever getting on base. And while star players are nice and they may put fans in the stands, it's the role players like the coffee table that win championships. Anyone who has ever sat in a room with a great couch, amazing entertainment center, but no coffee table understands exactly what that means. It is the glue that holds a room together, and no living room area will feel complete without one.
