The great thing about back to school supplies is that you can stock up on them to your heart's content without having to worry about them expiring. Sure, glue sticks might go a little funny if left alone for too long, but you just need to store them properly. Since it's November, you've probably already bought all the back to school supplies you need, but if you spot a sale (Black Friday is coming up, after all), there's no harm in picking up enough of a surplus to last your kid through junior and high school. Here's a list of what you might think about picking up. Ballpoint pens Pens are one of those things that can sit on a shelf for years before being bought and still work perfectly fine. If you see a 3-for-1 sale, go for it. This also applies to markers of any sort -- just make sure the unused ones stay wrapped up or when they're ready to be used they might not work as well. Notebooks/paper Short of a flood or fire, nothing's going to wreak havoc on paper or notebooks. Every so often -- usually about two to three weeks after school's started back up -- stores start selling paper and notebooks at ridiculously low prices. (Think 10 is outlandish? It's not.) Be careful about what you get, though -- teachers can be finicky about the line-ruling. Math teachers in particular tend to prefer college-ruled, while English teachers typically stick to wide-ruled. Split whatever you're buying down the middle, and your kid can use whatever's left over for the teachers who don't care either way. A three-ring binder Your kid will need something to hold all that paper in. You might think that a binder will last a while, and chances are that it will indeed make it through the school year, but the truth is they're oddly susceptible to damage. Something about the vinyl -- one little tear and your kid's not going to be able to resist ripping as much of it off as he possibly can. Better get at least twice as many as is needed. Pocket folders Pocket folders, like paper, tend to get sold at super low prices once the back to school supplies flurry is over. They're also pretty likely to get destroyed by your kid, between all the cramming into lockers and backpacks they endure. Colored pencils Even in high school your kid will need these, probably for science. For some reason science teachers love assigning diagrams and anatomical drawings to their students. A backpack You don't need to buy a bunch of these, but if your kid really likes his backpack, you might as well go ahead and buy a duplicate, in case the original one rips or just doesn't last as long as you expected. Buying back to school supplies in bulk can save you a lot of time, money and stress -- who wants to deal with getting everything all at once when the new school year starts anyway?
