Easy Ways to Make Your Self Defense More Effective

By : William Gabriel

The whole point of learning self defense is so that you can protect yourself in the event that you are ever attacked. Along with learning specific moves and techniques, there are some additional steps that you can take to make everything that you learn even more effective. There are a variety of variables that can become a barrier to effectively defending yourself. It doesn't matter if you are taking traditional classes or using a self defense video, there are certain mental aspects of defending yourself that you need to keep in mind. Three of the most important mental aspects are alertness, speed, and being opportunistic.

One thing about self defense that you simply cannot learn from a class or self defense video is that you need to be mentally alert at all times. This means paying attention to your surrounding environment and assessing if there are any threats. Staying alert can sound like a difficult proposition because no one wants to be tense or "on high alert" 24-7. Fortunately, this isn't something that must be done consciously After a few weeks of consciously sizing up your environment, your mind will naturally pay closer attention to your surroundings subconsciously Essentially, you will always be paying attention to your surrounding environment at all times, without actually thinking about it. The reason that this is important to do is because it doesn't matter how many moves you know if you never have a chance to use them. By staying alert, you can sense potential threats and be prepared for them before they arise

You can also make your self defense strategy by understanding how fights actually happen. One thing that people don't realize if they have never been in a fight before is that the average physical confrontation will only last 10 to 15 seconds. That means that in order to effectively defend yourself, you need to quickly get your strikes in and get away. There is no reason to plan how to handle an extended attack because most attacks simply don't last that long. The problem is that mentally, people don't understand how attacks actually happen because they have never experienced them. By taking the time to think through how an attack will happen, you be able to approach defending yourself in a more realistic manner.

Another way to make defending yourself more effective is to know when to be opportunistic. The whole point of learning self defense is to minimize your chances of being hurt. During every attack there will be a window in which you can escape, maybe even more than one. By knowing when to be opportunistic, you dramatically increase the likelihood that you will escape from the situation unharmed. In addition to knowing when to escape, you also need to be able to put your ego aside so that you actually do escape. There is nothing worse than creating a chance to escape only to let your ego keep you in the fight longer than it should.

When it comes to effective self defense, there is a lot more to consider than just learning the moves. You also need to be mentally prepared in order to gain the maximum benefit possible. It doesn't matter if you are learning in a class or from a self defense video, these mental aspects can be difficult to practice, but need to be given some attention. Three such mental aspects of defending yourself include: staying mentally alert, preparing for quick fights, and being opportunistic enough to escape when you have the chance.
