Using a Self Defense Video to Improve Your Speed

It doesn't matter what self defense video you are using, it is up to you to enhance your speed. There are zero self defense tactics that are more effective when you are slow. However, "speed" can be an elusive thing to work on because there are actually different types of speed. By looking at each type of speed and understanding the benefit that you will gain from it, you will be able to dramatically increase the effectiveness of your self defense techniques. Here is a closer look at the three basic types of speed and how they affect what you are learning.

When people think of speed, in terms of self defense, the first thing that comes to mind is your natural reflex speed. Your body has a natural reaction time, regardless of how fast it actually is. There are three different senses that affect your natural reaction time. These senses are touch, sound, and sight. Obviously, touch is the sense that you will be using the least because while you are trying to defend yourself, you are trying to avoid being touched. However, sound and sight are both incredibly important. This is because you will both see and hear things that can gain you an edge when trying to defend yourself. You can gain an edge because you hear someone approaching and can make the first move or you can see them start to throw a punch and avoid it or at least block it. A self defense video can help you improve your natural reaction time because it can give you clues or indicators to pay attention to. By knowing what to pay attention to, you know what to react to and what to ignore.

When practicing your self defense tactics, you should also pay special attention to your initiation speed. This is the speed at which you begin your movements, whether it is a strike, block, or other type of evasion. When following what your self defense video is teaching you, pay special attention to first step or two of each move. This is where you can improve your initiation speed. The benefit of using a video is that you can pause and re-watch the first few steps of a move in order to make sure that you are improving your initiation speed as much as possible. By focusing on proper form, you will likely be able to boost your speed as well.

A final area that is very important is your alteration speed. Essentially, this is how fast you can change directions while your body is still moving. This may be the most difficult type of speed to learn when using a self defense video because you will rarely be given exercises that force you to change directions mid-movement. However, you can still create your own exercises to work on this type of speed independently.

As you can see, you can gain a number of benefits to your speed by using a self defense video. It doesn't matter which self defense tactics you choose to utilize, they can all be improved when you boost your reaction time, initiation speed, and alteration speed.
